The accelerator pump should also help by squirting a bit of extra fuel in to smooth out the transition from primary to pri+ secondary opening. Check to make sure thats ok. There is a mod to increase the accelerator pump stroke which is usually done when changing to mechanical secondaries which might help too.

Does it rev more freely after about 4500rpm or still spluttering at higher revs?

It revs up ok through the range, but i cant floor it. I took it for a decent drive the other night. I could feel the secondariness opening at higher rpm without it bogging down loads but i had to be careful. I will check the accelerator pump this weekend. I can see two decent streams of fuel coming out when I just turn the throttle, and i can see the mech secondaries opening and closing when they should - so i deffo have a fuel issue somewhere. I am also going to double check for any vac leaks. The car also idles at 2000rpm? would that indicate anything?

Thanks!

Check for vac leaks again. There are a fair few sources to plug once the rats nest comes off. Standard idle speed is 750-800 rpm. So, either your idle is set way high or there is a (large) vac leak somewhere.

To compensate for a poor tune or carb issues. 1000rpm should give a nice idle.

Sounds like the acelerator pump is working ok from what you describe. Vacuum leaks can be tricky to locate and cause an erratic performance. There are a lot of tubes to be plugged or connected so it needs to be checked methodically. Perhaps you could post a few pics of the carb, hoses, linkages and manifold if you can?
If you drop the revs does it start to stall? 2000rpm is far too high an idle speed as Tool says. There are some good guides to tuning and resetting the Nikki once any vacuum leaks have been dealt with.

Hi all,

sorry for the very slow reply! Wedding planning and dissertation are taking over everything at the moment!

so the high idle turned out to be wonderfully simple!!! the linkage was a bit tight so the throttles weren't shutting properly. A few sprays of WD40 later, and sa slight 'modification' to the return spring and its dropped down to c. 800rpm.

I also took the carb off and gave whatever i could a decent clean ( without going ott - still not very expirenced and I wanted to drive it the next day) - It is now a hell of a lot better. still bogs down if i floor it but itdrives normals up until the flat out point.. its only when my foot is flat, all other times its fine!

so, apart froma small oil leak from the pan, a small water leak, an exhaust that needs some love and a sticky caliper its very much a decent driver.. or getting there! :D

Hi Matt welcome,
Do not forget the obvious, the main Fuel filter located underneath by the Diff/Fuel tank, often overlooked/easily blocked when tanks gets low and left for long periods,
