New to Rotary Ownership - Essex, UK

Hi all,

My names Matt, I live in Essex, England and I now own a reasonably clean FB!

I’ve had a few oldish Japanese cars, namely s14/14a’s, a couple of s13’s, skylines, soarers and then other stuff like e30’s, 420sec and a '70 bug etc (the rest isn’t as interesting!)

After a few years away from ‘fun cars’ I now have this!

From what I understand it used to run a ford 1.8 pinto lump. The guy I got it off fitted the 12a engine again and didn't quite get it finished… so I intend to! I have issues with bogging down when the car comes onto the second choke (but I will find the appropriate forum to stick up a post for that… or use the ‘search’.) it’s had the rats nest removed so I'm currently trying to swot up so I can be comfortable with this type of engine – I’ve had fun driving it so far though…even if only on the first choke!

As said, I am in Essex, so if anyone if reasonable local and can shed any light – get in touch!

Hello again, I spoke to you on facebook I believe. Sounds like you've owned some great cars! I nearly bought an E30 myself, my first car that I still own is a '74 bug. I'm also after an S13 or R32 daily!

As for the Carb, plenty to read up on!

If yours can't be cleaned and made to work as it's been modified then maybe better look for another carb. I haven't had too much experience with them, but I bought a rebuild kit for mine from rock auto and wanted to convert to mechanical secondaries, but I bought a spare off ebay and just used that. :P

cheers I will have a read through! I may just purchase the second carb to play with - if they're relatively cheap and accessible to purchase.

I'd get a 13 or 32 quick! They're shooting up in price due to everyone writing them off drifting!

I'm not sure if they pop up too often for sale but if you inquire around on forums and a few specialists someone would dig one out of their shed or something I'm sure. I'd offer you my old one but it came off my 12A 6PI so the jets are wrong and I keep meaning to do something with it and rebuild.

I need to sell my volkswagens and buy something RWD and turbo! It's scary how much R32s are going up so quickly, they make FBs look a bargain!

Nice looking car you have, the bogging down could be many things, check the simple stuff first, fuel delivery, fuel filters (there is a small filter in the carb), float levels, are the secondaries even opening? (vacuum operated).
Judging by the rear ride hight I'd say its out of fuel :lol:

Hi,

thanks! I have mechanical secondaries - the previous owner carried out the conversion.

From what I understand, now, instead of a vacuum and diaphragm opening the second set of valves its done via a mechanism running from the first valves... i still need to learn this!

I will take the filter off and see how it works, check fuel is squirting out etc first.

haha, yeah its a touch high! but it does have £30 in it at the moment! And i know the fuel gauge works. it doesn't progress in rpm or speed when the secondaries open, and if I had my foot down, i think it would grind to a halt eventually. it will rev all the way up on the first set of valves though. Hopefully will have some time to tonight to investigate further!

Mechanical secondaries can usually be adjused to come on a bit earlier or later. If you open the secondaries too early and too quickly (below 3000 ish RPM) it will usually bog, that's normal. Ease the secondaries open slowly when at the lower revs and see if that helps. If that doesn't help much you could adjust the start of secondary opening / throttle position or put it back to vaccum secondaries (don't do that though - mechanical secondaries are great fun once you get the hang of it).
Where abouts in Essex are you? I'm in the Hornchurch so might be able to assist.

It just goes no where when the secondaries come in at the moment - just splutters or bogs, im not too sure.

it felt like a power jet on bike carb, my bike engine got keihin race flat slide power jet carb, it come on at 4000-4500rpm, bang, it went up the rev very quick.. same thing happen if you drove it on the normal road and beware the power come on and it can shoot off....
