Take the lid off the blue air filter and pour a bit of neat petrol straight down the throat of the carb....not a bomb load, just a splash...... leave the choke in, put your foot to the floor on the throttle and crank it over a few times and see if it fires..... if it does, you've probably got a fuelling problem...... dodgy pump, blocked filters etc etc... if not, come back to us

Tried that, doesn't seem much different... very occasionally it seems like it's trying a little harder to turn over but that could just be my wishful thinking.
Am I looking at a compression problem?

You perhaps need to go back to basics then and methodically check the ignition and the fuelling.
Take the leading plugs out and hold them onto the iron part of the engine then crank it over.... they should spark.... if not then you have an ignition problem
Spinning the engine over without these plugs in will also expel any excess fuel out of the engine.
If you have a spark on both of the leading plugs, put them back in, turn the ignition on and listen for the electric fuel pump running... it's located under the car just ahead of the passenger side rear wheel..... if you can hear it, take the lid off the air filter again and pour a touch of engine oil down the throat of the carb..... if you've got low compression this will help........ next, give it full choke, don't touch the throttle and try to start the car.

yes, the bottom plugs are the leading plugs ( with black leads)...... see here....




check your HT leads against mine.

Hard to be sure from your pic on previous page, but I think you have the HT leads reversed on your front rotor?

Distributor cap is marked.....L1, L2, T1, T2
Rotors are 1....2 from radiator. Trailing plugs are the top 2. So looking onto the plugs you have T1, T2 at the top, L1, L2 at the bottom.
Just trace the leads back on that basis.
Oh, and the metering pump lines look fine, no worries.

Sadly this wasn't it, although my battery does need a decent charge after the starting attempts today. I went through something similar many times checking plugs heating them up expelling fuel and replaced nearly all ignition system in the end got fed up bought a compression tester and found out had really low compression, bit of a relief just knowing what was wrong and started whipping the engine out for a rebuild plus gives me chance to pretty things up, just my opinion but don't rule out poor compression, there's plenty of info on here on how to test compression.
