Hi All!

I'm George Péczely from Hungary. I have a '84 Fb. The car was first sold in Germany, as far as I know, I'm the third owner, I bought it in November 2011. It has two exras in it, A/C, and grey two colour paint (see picture). It runs great, starts in hot and cold weather also very well. I made some repairs, and also plan many:

Already made:
- repairing some minor rusts
- replacing front shock absorbers
- replacing spark plugs
- minor electric repairs (fuel level sensor, power window switch, hatch release, power mirror, windshield washers)
- replacing fuel pump
- inserting fuel filter (I bought the car without fuel filter lol)
- carburaetor repairs, cleaning
- changing all oils

Planned (bigger things ahead):
- repairing/replacing exhaust system (it has a leak on it)
- repairing steering (huge backlash(?))
- engine inspection, especially apex seals
- repairing chassis (there are some deformations on the lifting/towing points)
- Repairing A/C
- and whatever comes :)

I use premixing (1:300, TCW quality oil), also I have the factory oiling system in use.
How I use the car:
- When starting the engine, I always stay at low rpm (below 2500) until the engine is warmed up thoroughly.
- Once, or twice a month, I drive 2 * 10 kms (6-7 miles, this is the road to my father-in-law) in 3rd gear with 110-120 km/h (60-70 miles/h), with lot of full throttle to burn out the carbon deposits. After this, the engine is always running smoother :D
- This is a 2nd car for me as I have a company car, so I only use it for fun/hobby purposes.

Where I need help:
- As I'm planning the replacement of the exhaust system, I don't really know where to start. Any hints and tips would be great.
- I was searching the net but I could not find good data on what the differences are between US/Canada and European versions of Fb. I'd be happy to have any kind of information on this (are the differences only visual, or there are som mechenical differences too?)
- Any help that could bring me closer to completing my plans are welcomed :)

Welcome to the the forum George, always great to see some great FB examples.
Racing Beat do some nice exhausts but they are quite expensive and seem to be designed for street and race rather than an an economical stock replacement. Still worth a look at their European site.

Do not buy anything from Racing Beat Europe.

Clive is a nasty spiteful little man.
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

Hi George.

I assume you have looked at the steering idler bushes? If worn backlash is very bad. Real easy to fix.

Hi George,
welcome to the forum, that's a nice looking car you have there th:

Looks like a Euro spec series 3 car. As far as exhaust go, it's worth looking for a good second hand stainless system..... they are guaranteed for life as they don't rust so usually outlast the car. They are quite common on scrap RX7's in the Uk and usually sell for around £100 even if it cost another £100 to ship to Hungary, you would still be getting an exhaust at a decent price....... racing beat stuff is nice quality but very expensive.
If you do buy from them, buy from Racing Beat in the USA...... Racing Beat Europe is just a reseller who adds in his own markup/ profit so it's more cost effective to buy direct from Racing Beat themselves.
As Dave says, regarding backlash in the steering, the first place to start is the idler arm bush, they tend to disintegrate in no time at all.

Does your car have the updated dash or the old style?

- Thank you for the suggestion with the steering idler bushes. I'm pretty sure that I have some problem there. After some driving (maybe it has some relationship with the heat the engine produces), when I turn the steering wheel, the steering idler joint/bush(?) gives a rattling noise. Also, when I'm driving on roads that have longitudinal rut (or groove? I don't know the proper word) on it, it is forcing the car to the right or left direction depending on which side am I of the rut(groove). I found this on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mazda-Rx7-Rx7-1 ... 0571043951), is this the part I need for repair you think? (Btw is this a standard part so I wouldn't have to order it from the USA?)

- About the exhaust topic: thank you for the answers! I did not write, but my intention is to stay as close to stock as possible. I'm neither a racer, nor I wish to exceed all speed limits all the time, I only would like to have a stylish car that can go reasonably (but not too) fast. Therefore racing and performance solutions are not for me.

- What you wrote about second hand exhaust assemblies sounds very interesting to me. Could you give some further information on this? Maybe a webpage, or some ideas how could I manage this? Thank you!

Hi George,

Yes those bushes look correct. But the post (mail) cost is horrific for 2 small light bushes. You could ask Atkins for cheaper postage.

Or....I figure bushes for Right Hand Drive cars (UK, Japan etc) will be the same as your Left Hand Drive Idler, even though the metal idlers will not themselves reverse to fit (we have tried to get better idlers from US).

So you could try a UK supplier like RX Motors in Dorset, England. Mr Tim White is the man. His mail is rxmotors at hotmail dot co dot uk
Tel 0044 1725 516462. He may be a lot cheaper for post.

There are other people in UK.......chaps??? who to suggest.

To change bushes you can dismantle on the car......it all comes apart easy. Use a grease that will not not rot the bushes. Like ??? can't remember, maybe there's a grease supplied.

Forget Atkins George, their shipping costs are outrageous..... these are the ones you need and this company is very good...
