Set of S2 rear calipers

Post by Ulvegrip »

For my friend's silver S2 1983 we need a set of rear calipers in such a condition that we don't need to do anything to the cylinders or pistons but we are prepared to renovate the other aspects of it.

We will be in London 23-25 of March for some binge drinking for pickup if that suits, otherwise we'd have to discuss the delivery details.

In mazdatrix terms the calipers are for a 12A GSL (dunno what transfers into for UK sold FBs)

Apart from Elford and kitted variants, 1st Generation UK cars were only ever one model supplied for each series, S1, S2,S3

That makes it easier but you still need to double check your Swedish supplied S2's were the same.

We're looking for calipers for the unvented discs.

Swedish FB rear axle and rear brakes
S1 were never sold in sweden
S2 came with unvented discs and the non LSD rear axle with 4x110 bolt pattern.
S3 came with the vented rear discs and the LSD axle with 4x114,3 bolt pattern.

Hi there,

I've a little info which may help you as I've just overhauled the entire rear brake set-up.

Mine is a 1983, 4x110 non vented set up.

The callipers from a latter vented type (like the U.S GSL-SE) do not fit and it's a bit of work and a chunk of money to do.

As time was critical for me, I sent my existing callipers off to Bigg Red (http://www.biggred.co.uk) to be re manufactured. My callipers were in a really bad way and one of the pistons had to be "sleeved" but the pressure test passed fine and they were promptly fitted with new discs and pads.

Brakes are now like new and had I longer time, would have got them finished in a nice colour.

So, perhaps you could ship off to Bigg Red and get them to turn the around for you?

Hope this helps a little.

All your S3s had LSDs? How many S3s did you get?

Hmmmm. Not only can you start sending wheels over here but also some LSDs ;)

Can you put a S3 LSD into a S2 axle?

current consenus seems to be 'we don't think so'....

I've got a s3 complete rear axle going for free if anyone wants to experiment... I took it off my Elford at christmas because the diff was noisy.... doesn't matter though if it was going onto an s2 and having an lsd fitted.

You can actually. The S2 has 24 spline side gears and the S3 has 26 spline side gears. You just have to swap them out. They're all factory 3.9 ratio too.

Not cheap to do it properly.

I sold a S3 LSD last year. There was a lot of queries about it.

I've got a couple of 24 spline LSDs in the garage for RX2 through RX7 S2.

Yes all our S3 had LSDs I don't know the sales figures but I'll get back to you on that.

If your S2 axles were the same as ours (non vented rear discs, 4x110 bolts) then NO, won't fit at all. To our collected know-how here in Sweden there is actually no non-open diff that fits into the S2 axle.

Wheels is probably doable but our S3 LSDs are hard to come by as it is.

Get hold of them and sell them on. They're very popular ;)

Here's one of mine from a S2 (which is a straight swap into my RX2):
