Street Legal Class build.

Post by NoxMonster »

Hi there, So this is my first post if we don't count the greeting one . I like to get straight to the build post as that gets me the most friends in a forum quickly :P . Im into drag racing and have a few accomplishments in the past with Honda's even though that's not the first platform that comes into mind for straight line racing . All my builds have been with nitrous so far and for the first time im going to jump into turbos and their great friendship with rotaries. I recently sold my beloved civic coupe which i won Jr. power adder class with here in El Paso Texas. Frankly enough , the fastest street legal car in here is a CRX and is able to get into 9's in full street trim and able to cruise around with no worries . He's a friend of mine from back in school and we have been going at it for a while . Sadly the most i was able to squeeze out of my car ( again in street trim ) is an 11.8 , but car has easily ran mid 12's with street tires. I basically had enough of him and decided to snag the title from him with this build. Here is a quick list of things going into the build some of which i have allready acquired and some which i need to work my butt off for while.
The Car ,
build1.jpg
1985 GSL-SE shell , everything is there minus engine and transmission.
The engine-- ,
- S4/S5 hybrid JDM 13B-REI
- large street port
- oem apex seals (low mileage)
- Atkins solid corner seals (new)
- FD corner seal springs (new)
- oem side seals and springs (new)
- shimmed oil pressure regulator
- upgraded high flow eccentric shaft oil jets
- Racing Beat upgraded thermal pellet
- modified high flow throttle body
- emissions delete
- OMP delete
- gilmer drive pulley system with under-driven water pump and alt
- 12a front cover / 13b GSL-SE oil pan
F/I parts--
Garrett 54mm compressor. .60 AR and 1.15 AR turbine
Custom Turbo Manifold made by Supernatural
Last gen Tial 50mm
Fuel--
Bosch EV14 780cc primary / 1000cc secondary
Walbro 340lph
Aem Meth inj. kit.
Custom E85 tank , upgraded lines and Flex fuel sensor.
Transmission --
Still not decided , i need to check to see if sequential boxes are allowed in street class , i also wanna track the car for fun . If not TII transmission.
Driveline-
Custom aluminum . kevlar reinforced driveshaft , Granny's 8.8 inch Level 2 package.
Suspension --
Still needs to be sorted out , has to be dual purpose compatible where i can adjust or change springs to switch between strip/track. Open to ideas.
Chassis--
Custom 6 point chromoly roll cage , Kirkey Road Race seat. Axle stabilizer support ( homemade recipe ). Add weight into the ream bumper and figure out a way to quickly remove/install to switch between road/track.

Since i want this car to be dual purpose , i don't expect any kind of glory in both aspects but something that can be mildly competitive on both fronts. Depending on my work schedule and financial situation i expect this car to be ready anywhere between 3 months- to a year. Lemme know what you guys think , any suggestion or ideas , or something you see that might not work. Thanks for reading and take care.

The project is moving at decent speed car is almost ready to paint now , removed the rear bumper , hood , hatch glass , side molds and reflectors . Decided to do the "rear bumper delete" I was thinking how the car would look without the rear bumper and i found a thread that i liked very much . Im gonna find some kind of weight i can screw into rear space spot and take it out for when im road racing , this should give me enough grip for drag and keep the car from over and snap steering at the track. Lot's of weight has been coming off the car , the goal is to try and get under 2000 pounds without driver and not counting roll cage. Can anyone tell me why the gsl-se is so much heavier than others other than the power steering , windows and drivetrain differences. Where else can i remove weight? Without going into Lexan and expensive stuff . Oh also how do i remove those bumper supports ? Never messed with a car this old , i removed the two bolts on the sides and can't seem to access to the back from bottom or inside the car :/ ..

Good to have Puerto Ricos as your friends. They are built very fast drag race engines.

Bigger brakes all round, thicker axles, thicker stub shafts etc. It all adds up.

The shell is otherwise the same as S2 / non GSL-SE
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

Wow it's hard to guess such minor looking differences would add up so much , considering a 5.0 mustang is only about 300 pounds heavier than a 2.3 4cyl . And those basically have the same differences such as lighter axle , brakes and of course 4 less cylinders and 1 less head. Well i'm doing the ford axle conversion anyways and maybe will get a lighter , big brake kit in the front at least . I guess other than that just remove the whole interior and everything that looks like it won't aid me in going fast or prevent me from stopping and of course keep everything in to pass safety inspection :)

Some eye candy to keep the thread alive and show progress in the build , so far acquired most of the "big" parts needed for the build , apart from a couple sensors and ity bity pieces i got everything i need . Acquired some solution to adress ignition and engine control :) Gonna go hunt down a GM tps sensor at the junk garden and other stuff you guys dont care about.

I do have a subject im confused about though , where can i find some engine mount " brackets " and good engine mounts for the engine and which specific ones do i need to install the turbo 2 into the gsl'se , i did a good amount of research but i can't find any solid information regarding the engine mounts and brackets i need , can somebody shine a light to the subject?

You need to swap the front cover to the original GSL-SE one, and the sump too. Then it will all bolt in using the original mount across the front.
