Rust under the windscreen

Post by Threesevens »

I am shortly going to embark on a project to get rid of some rust and do a full repaint on my 1985 Elford Turbo.
One of the areas that needs attention is around the windscreen. The scuttle panel that goes under the windscreen is showing signs of corrosion. The guy who is going to do the work reckons he can fabricate the panel if it is too corroded although it doesn't look that bad. I don't suppose this panel is available anywhere? Also there is a rubber trim that looks like it fits internally along the edge of the scuttle panel under the windscreen. Is this available and does anyone know the part number? Alternatively is there a rubber from another vehicle that could be used. I know this type of repair is not uncommon so hopefully someone can give me some guidance.
I have managed to get hold of the windscreen clips but are there any other bits I should try and get hold of just in case?
There is a bit of trim that fits in the gap between the top of the windscreen and the roof panel. I am not sure what state it will be in when the windscreen is removed but are these available and what is the part number.
Thanks
Kevin

Remember S3 has two washer jets on the scuttle panel.
Whereas the S2 has one central jet hole.

Thanks Codge,
I hope it is clear if he has to copy the original part that it has the two jets.
I am a bit concerned because he has never done a restoration on an FB so I might need to come back for a lot more guidance.

Hi Cliff,

The guy who is doing the work texted me yesterday to say he is ready to take the car this weekend and wants it for 3 months.
Didn't really get a lot of feedback on some of the potential issues but I hope I can get any bits that I might need as we go on.
By the time I finish this project I will be skint

Hi Kevin - good man, best time of the year to have the bodywork done. So is the work being done professionally or by a friend / enthusiast ?
By the time she is finished and you stand back with a huge grin / smile of your face, you'll have forgotten about the cost BUT it will have been worth it g-l

Hi Cliff,

The work is being done by a professional although he also has another job and does it as a side line so that is why it will take 3 months. I left the car with him today. I have seen some of his work and it looks good but he has never worked on an RX7 before although he said he is looking forward to doing the work because of the rarity of the car.
Although my car is in pretty good nick it will take some work to get it too a good standard. It had a new nearside wing fitted sometime ago and he is going to refit it so all the gaps are spot on. The front spoiler is cracked so he is going to repair that also as well as sorting out the windscreen area. The car has been repainted in the past and there quite a few imperfections which only manifest themselves when you are polishing it. From 3ft away it looks really good but that is not good enough for me
He is also going to redo the underneath of the car. I have been underneath and it looks good with no visible signs of rust but the original protection is flaking off in places so it needs to be redone. It was originally done by a company called Pava and was more of a paint than a thick tar substance. Any recommendations for a good product to use would be appreciated.
While he is underneath he is going to fit a new clutch.
Then a full repaint in its original black metallic. I then need to think about some subtle striping or maybe not.
I am going to pop over now and again to keep a check on its progress but he has said he will take plenty of photos so I will try and post some of these if i can master Photobucket
When that is all done I will need to think about wheels and tyres. Not sure whether to get the standard series 3 wheels refurbed or go for something a bit more stylish. I must admit I get a bit confused what will or won't fit so if you have any suggestions that would be great.
When I have finished I will have spent in excess of £8k in total and have a car worth £4k but I feel I have a responsibility to keep this Elford on the road.
Cheers
Kev

Well done, it will be all worth it when you look back & I hope to see you at one of the meets in the summer 0-0

A red stripe (for those of us who have one), find that it adds at least 10 BHP  Red & Black always go together. h[b[

Yes I plan to get to at least one of the meets this year so hope to meet up with some of you.

I thought I might get 15bhp extra with a silver stripe rather than red :x
