Last year IrishRotary.com ran a great 7s Day event, backed by Mazda, on 7/7/2013. The guy who organised it last year is doing the same against this year. Our contact in Mazda from last year has actually moved on, so we're trying to convince Mazda to back it again this year and we're hoping to have some track time as part of the meet this year at the National Raceway, Mondello Park.
Here is a message from the organiser -
Would any of the UK or Euro guys be interested in making the trip over? I'll be travelling back home myself from Switzerland for it (could do with a lift if anyone is going from EuropeHi people, quick introduction. Last year saw the first Mazda rotary meeting, held on the 7th July(7s Day). The idea of a 7s day started in Japan, no surprise there. I organised the event last year with the help of Mazda. It took place in the Midway Centre in Portlaoise, followed by a run along the Gordon Bennett route. Great day had by all, with a fantastic mix of cars, not just rotaries. We had all three generations of the RX-7 represented, a rotary drag car(which had its engine fitted only hours previously) RX-8s, a triple rotor Cosmo and a number of MX-5s.
Cars came from the UK to the event and this year will be even better.
So, time to get the ball rolling.
Was speaking with a nice chap in Mazda earlier regarding the meet. We discussed the idea of Mondello, rough numbers expected, cost etc.
Mazda are keen to help with the meeting, but don't have the time to organise it themselves. As I organised last years meeting, I told him I would be happy to do so this year again, and not expect any payment for my time.
I would be delighted to see this grow into the event it deserves to be. I think last year was a great success, as did everyone else I think.
Mondello would be the ideal location, IMO.
Ideally I'd like to see track access for those that want to, a show and shine competition, Mazda displaying their current lineup and offering test drives, stalls selling merchandise. There could be passenger rides in the track prepped Mazda 3s that the race school use too. Ideas, ideas. With the anniversary of the MX-5 this year, its another reason to get together. There was a nice mix of Mazda cars at last years event, thanks again to all who turned up on the day.
Once I hear back from Mazda, which I hope will be soon, I'll update you all again. Once we know where its going to take place, organisation can kick into a higher gear.
Watch this space.
Please add your name if you would consider attending, it'll help show Mazda we are serious.
Add your name to the list if you're interested!
