Will a S2 engine, flywheel and clutch mate to a S3 gearbox?
Hi everyone. I recently changed my engine on the S3 rx7 by putting a S2 block with flywheel and clutch already attached. The splines were the same and it bolted straight onto the S3 gearbox. I went to move it today and when I did I heard a nasty grinding noise like the prop was rubbing on something. I can't check it myself so I just thought I'd ask if I have made a mistake by slotting the S2 stuff to the S3 gearbox. Also the clutch feels like there's hardly any bite to it. It might just be how it is though
Cheers

The gearboxes are virtually identical so shouldn't be any issues there.
The blocks are the same re rear plate, but the flywheel mass is different and S3 clutch is 225mm vs S2 215mm.
Not sure what's up. Should swap over fine. Check round the clutch/flywheel.

yes, the s3 gearbox will bolt up and work no problem so your grinding noise isn't caused by a mis-match

OK cheers, I think it might be the prop then as it seems to vibrate through the car as well. As I'm gonna need a new clutch now.... will I'm guessing I will need to buy a S2 clutch? I'll let you know how I get on with the noise

You want a 215mm clutch for a S2.
You haven't switched flywheels or anything have you? I know you said you didn't but I'm just checking.

It might be something as simple as a heatshield fouling the driveshaft. This happened to me a few months back. Jack up the rear under the diff housing so this simulates load on the suspension and turn the wheels. Have a look at the same time to see if anything is touching the driveshaft.

Well I took your advise and jacked up the rear wheels by the diff. I spun them and found out that it was the propshaft catching on the exhaust heat shield. I don't know how it managed to bend itself round to that point but at least it's fixed now... phew
Thanks guys. Just need to get a clutch now and fit that lol.

ah nice one. Will I not need a clutch cover then? If I can get away with just the plate that would be good
Thanks for the link
