just got a 1985 series 3

Post by hoy89 »

Hi, just got myself a '85 series 3 for a light winter project to hopefully get out on the roads come summer. Found her through a mate, nearly bought one last year but then i seen this one i have now so held off. £800 with a full mot and 5 month tax was all i needed to hear to buy her. Couple little niggles but nothing major. Couple tiny patches of rust. One question, as far as i can figure there should be two pipes running from the manifold right to the back box? Is this right? it apears one on mine has been cut in half and just left with only one actually going to a back box which isn't the right one. The mate i got it from said it was the wrong box.

cheers, Kieran :)

Hey, Kieran, welcome to the FBworld. We love pics here, when you get a minute ;)

As to your exhaust question, well (almost) all the wisdom pertaining to the FB is here... somewhere! This link should take you to a thread Ian posted almost as if to answer your exact question 8-) viewtopic.php?f=33&t=378
I think you'll find the second pipe is emissions rubbish from the original thermal reactor, and depending on how changed from standard your car is, may be completely redundant. The thermal reactors tend to die and get chucked away in favour of headers quite a bit

Welcome mate.

Bit late now, but check Ian's rust guide. Pull the back seat base out and see if the light shines through.
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

Hi Kieran and welcome. As Nik above (Lucky), and Ian's pics, the original Mazda exhaust had a smaller air pipe which ran with the main exhaust pipe to the back.
Chances are that when a previous owner has changed the front section to a stainless system (Janspeed or Double 'S"), they've left the rest of the system with the redundant air pipe still in place but cut through. Providing it's secure and not flapping it's not an MOT issue. My Mazda back box has the air pipe still welded in place like that.

Any chance of a very rough location for my register Keiran. County would be fine. Your car was in Scotland earlier this year? Still around the same area perhaps?

Yeah rust behind seats has been fixed already. Cheers. Not had a proper look yet so might get re done if its a bad job. The car is still in Scotland, highlands. About 40 mile north of Inverness :). Only ever seen one other in the area. Sure there is probably more tucked away though.
Thanks for the welcome everyone. :D
