found the timing light, adjusted it according to the handbook, also set the carb to run a little richer, it feels better abit smoother but not as quick off the mark, and its still juddering when you come off the acclerator!

methinks the carb needs cleaning out! in fact when we went out in it dad said its the carb it needs cleaning out!

now i remember a garage we used to work it had this little metal contraption that you put carbs into and it cleaned them no idea what it was, but is there any other way of doing it, i was thining of just getting some carb cleaner and spraying it into the carb to clean it out!

Any suggestions?

You can take the top of the carb off with relative ease, and then you can access all the jets to blow them through with carb cleaner and clean all the crap out of the float bowls. Made a hell of a difference to my Nikki.

You'll need to take the carb off the car to do it, and be careful not to disturb the float heights etc.

This website has got some good info on how to make the most out of the Nikki carb and on their downloads page there's an offocial Mazda Manual for the carb. :)

Common on IDAs (hence progression hole mod) but a 4 barrel Nikki running primaries and secondaries should be smooth as silk.
I've had it on Nikkis. My series 2 had it pretty bad.

Progression mod hole is to cure the flat spot between idle and main jets I always thought (not that it personally bothered me). That's a different thing to what the OP is describing?

I know the early carbs had a soleniod which riched up the mixture on de-acceleration. Maybe do some searching around that mr OP?

Also you'll have a fuel filter fitted under the car next to the pump. I've owned a few cars where it looks like its never been found/changed

yeh i was thinking about the fuel filter the other day

last time i had the car on the road was in 2006, and evreytime i went up a hill it would cut out, and i would have to wait a few minutes to start it back up, this went on for a few weeks and i was wracking my brain to think what it could be, then one evening i got it up on the ramp to check the fuel filter, and it was clogged up, and it would appear that evreytime i went up a hill it would just block the flow of the fuel, couple of quid for a new filter problem sorted!

so the fuel filter thats on the car hasnt done much mileage but has been on the car for about 6 years, gunna have a look it along with the carb on sat, i did blast some carb cleaner through the card the other day blew out a load of black smoke but the juddering seems to be getting worse its always when you step of the acclerator and its coasting!

Thanks for the suggestions, gunna strip the carb down on the weekend and see what its like!

Anyone now where i can get seals/gaskets for the carb should the be required?
