Rebuilt my instrument cluster

Post by ian65 »

Today I've rebuilt my instument cluster to incorporate the parts from the JDM turbo cluster with the UK spec cluster out of my black series 3.
The cluster was stripped down to clean out nearly 30 years of dust....

The differences between the UK cluster and the JDM set are that the JDM turbo set have a built in boost gauge and a speed sensor which is needed to provide a signal to my power steering. To get these features to work, I had to mount my own UK spec speedo and fuel/oil/ temp gauges onto the JDM circuit board.

I then stripped the speed sensor off the JDM speedo which was calibated in kilometres and fitted it to my speedo... this was then fitted to the JDM cluster casing / circuit board...

followed by the fuel/oil/temp gauges as the JMD ones were calibrated in metric...

All the old bulbs have been checked and replaced if they were a bit burnt but it's occurred to me that since this old illumination was designed 30 years ago, there are now much better options to light up the clock faces.
One idea is to put an EL panel behind each face which would give loads of illumination...

I could even put a separate bit of panel behind the red section of the rev clock linked to the rev buzzer so that over the red line, the red section of the rev clock illuminates..... plenty of options really.

One thing I am going to do it replace the useless 'headlight up' telltale light with an 'overboost' light for the turbo.... just need to find a nice little turbo logo.

To power the built in electric boost gauge, I need a sender...
any idea if this will work ( as I'm only running 6psi)?
