Air con compressor rebuild

Post by Victorsanders »

Hi chaps

I’m in the process of rebuilding my Aircon compressor (Clarion F140)

I’m updating all the O-rings to allow the use of R134a gas but iv found the internal gaskets to be in a bit of a state.

I can’t find any suppliers.. so my question is.. is there any reason I couldn’t use gasket paper and a thin layer of heat and oil resistant high temp RTV ?

I can’t find any information stating either way

Any suggestions on another more suitable gasket material would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers all

Vic

is your car an import? Most don't have aircon, didn't think it was an option for UK cars.

It’s not from my Elford .. I pulled it from a parts car I had.. that wasn’t an import so I think it’s an aftermarket install. It seems to be much simpler than the US versions of AC from what I can find online

I’m rebuilding it to put in the Elford as it didn’t hold pressure .. the AC condenser and receiver drier were screwed so I’m using a universal kit and getting hoses made up

The evaporator seems to be in good nick.. il give it a thorough clean and pressure test before fitting it

I think I’m gonna give gasket paper and RTV a shot .. it’ll either work or it won’t 😂

What compressor oil you will take? Should be compatible to the new 134 a. A new elring paper should be enough, no rtv is needed.

Il be using PAG oil which is compatible with R134a

The old gasket is a thin layer of metal with a rubber coating .. to be safe I’m gonna use a very thin layer of RTV on the gasket paper.

You’re probably right and it would likely be fine with the gasket paper but I’m going to just add a bit for peace of mind

I personally like hylomar blue on paper gaskets or 3 bond RTV sealing metal to metal, not sure if either are compatible with A/C though.

So I got 99% success

It all cleaned up and went back together lovely. Topped up with PAG oil

However .. one of the brass connectors sheered off when torquing !

Hopefully I can use a reverse extractor tomorrow and get it back out without any brass debris getting inside the compressor. Otherwise it’s getting taken apart again 😂
