Lock barrel polishing?

Post by Victorsanders »

Hi all. The previous owner of my Elford decided to paint the lock barrels black and it’s chipping away every time I unlock the car.

I’d like to take all of them off and disassemble them to clean and polish the metal but I can’t see a simple way to take them apart without damaging them.. does anyone have any experience with taking apart a lock barrel?

I could polish them fully assembled but I don’t want to get water/polish/crud in the barrel

Hi Vic, as far as I remember the exterior face plate is crimped on and not removable without damage.

Hi Steve. Thanks for that.

I won’t attempt to take them apart then.

Il gently clean the centre piece and then mask it off to polish the outer ring

Thanks

No trouble to polish. Take it complete and do it.

I prefer the black look. So easy to repair some scratches from time to time with hammerit black hammerschlag.

The black look does look mint on your car!

I might see what they look like polished and go from there

I saw an ozzy RX7 on Facebook yesterday with polished chrome door handles and roof trim.. it looked fantastic.. but I think a bit too shiny for me .. il stick with shiny locks 😂

A lot of other countries have a different mechanism on their door handles aye. A one piece unit that pulls outwards to open
Whilst UK cars have a 2 piece handle where the lower part lifts up and in to the top half to open up. If that makes sense?

In saying that. I believe the old bugeye 323's have chrome handles that can be installed in our cars (one piece units). I think they are available from Mazda also? Or maybe Phils Rotary
