Carter fuel pump. Fitting

Post by rustyrescue »

Amazon delivered a Carter pump at an excellent price from USA in shorter time than UK deliveries! happy :D Has anybody fitted one??
A couple of queries seeing as the instructions are not very thorough.

The kit includes a check valve to be Teed into the existing fuel line paralel to the new pump......I have no idea what this achieves..is it needed?? in the past any electric pump like this used simply has the tank pick up in and carb feed out! My only thought is if it is set to allow back flow if the system overpressures and act like a fuel return.

The drawing shows the pump mounted vertically, it is a chunky high pump and would be better horizontal. Nothing is mentioned about mounting angle/position.

Finally, I hear the push on connecters supplied are not very good.....looking at the brass poles they could be threaded with a die for nuts and ring terminals....anyone tried? I dont want to twist the terminal and break it inside the pump.

Hi there
I fitted a carter like yours on my 82 12a bp running a webber 48ida the conectors are fine but they need to be pushed all the way onto the plastic pump bottom I cut a small bit off the black part and found they fitted better
Pump is mounted on rear passenger side chassis rail in upright position as low as possible inlet at tank bottom you might need to run a relay and new power from the battery to get the best out of the pump !
These pumps are noisy might drive you mad! What carb and engine are you running that needs this flow rate ?
Was running with pre pump filter and pre carb filter with aeroflow return regulator stock pipes to start with then changed to an6 flow and return (new tank input for return)
I'm now just using the pump to fill a swirl pot feeding a bosch as I've converted the engine to efi with some suzukitl1000r throttlebodies using the 48ida intake !
Could pm some photos if you need of mounting
