When trying to remove the lid maybe use interior plastic trim removal tools if you have them or can borrow them. Wedge and pry up them down between the gap between the lid and body. This will prevent you from scratching up the lid when trying to remove the lid with say a metal screw driver.

Managed to get the air filter cap off today, don't know what all the fuss was about
It came off pretty easily when I rocked it, it does help when you know what you are doing.
Also Thomas got the white dots aligned
While I was at it I thought I should start cleaning the engine bay. Quite a bit to do but it looks better already

Just a quick question for those in the know, does the Elford do away with the pipe that comes out of the centre of the air filter ?

Friday was not a good day.
Arranged to take the car to a guy I know to get a quote for the nearside wing repaint. He does high end work so I know he will do a proper job and won't kidnap the car.
So I took the car out of the garage and all seemed fine apart from some rattling coming from the rear exhaust box. Will probably need to get that replaced soon. Any suggestions where to get it from?
So the Mrs came with me and we are driving along ok and then the engine started revving at upto 6k revs and I didn't have my foot on the accelerator.
The revs dropped when I engaged the clutch but then shot back up again and then dropped off again. The Mrs was quite alarmed!
I stopped at the side of the road and couldn't immediately see the problem so I drove on about 3 miles to the paint shop.
As soon as I got there I opened the bonnet and could see the throttle linkage cable was a bit loose.
The paint guy went and got some small spanners and tightened the linkage up and the engine settled down but was still over revving a bit but not like before. On the drive home it was a lot better but still over revving.
I have had a look at the linkage this morning and have no idea how to adjust it to get the car running as it should. There appears to be a number of potential adjustment points but I am likely to make it worse. Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Please remember this is the Elford set up and has different carbs to the standard model. I attach a photo and hopefully someone can see what has gone wrong. I must have done something either when removing the air filter or when I was cleaning to engine bay, so I can only blame myself.
To make matters worse the paint guy said he wouldn't touch my car until the summer because of the ceramic coating spray I used to polish it, which he thinks contains silicone, and he won't allow any traces of silicone in his paint shop.
Should have stayed in bed.

First you have to warm up your car (3 miles aren't enough). Second (without your wife) race your car on the highway 150 miles. Attention control your oillevel cause condense water will go out.
After them check the idle. It make no sense play with the carb on the cold engine. Check the butterfly are closed inside the carb.
Sorry i am never work with elford engines. Ian will tell you more, so you need to adjust the two screws on your carb.

All the linkages look very dry, give them a good spray with a light oil, the springs are probably sticking, also oil the throttle cable, if one of the strands of the cable have broken in the sleeve through being dry you will need a new cable. The cable clamps being loose would have the opposite effect & it would not rev. If your man has adjusted the length it is now wrongly adjusted as they do not tighten themselves.
Think of it as a push bike cable eg brake or gear, it works the same way.
It would be a good idea to get a Haynes Manual & a AA Book of the car, it explains a vehicles workings in easy to understand language & all major components.
These cars need constant attention so you will find that you will be able to understand the mechanical principles easily with the above 2 Reference manuals (I have had the AA manual since I was 17 when I drove my first car, a mini to Germany having just passed my test, forgot map & got lost in Brussels, but that is another story).
I taught my Granddaughter to drive about 5 years ago & used the AA manual to show her how everything worked so she understood what happens when she put her foot on the brake/clutch/ throttle & how to top up fluids & change bulbs.

I have the Haynes manual but it only deals with the standard model and not the Elford. As far as the cable is concerned I think he tightened it but not sure so I am loathe to touch it. Maybe I need a specialist to sort it out. I will go and spray it with a light oil as you suggest Thanks
