some of you will have seen our FB introduced, ahead of spending/ordering parts from USA I figured it worth looking at the carb to see if I can make it run better. Stripped top off, cleaned all jets/airways. Set floats etc etc.
I have not stripped it further without a kit, but the accelerator pump squirts etc.
You may recall I said the "idle" was all over the place from just high to very high.
It turns out the oil metering pump lever was covered in gunge and very stiff, so not returning properly and I think holding the throttle part open.
Do people use these pumps still or is it like a lot of old 2 stroke bikes, pumps disconnected and premix used in tank?
Anything else I should check out on the carb before refitting it?
I figure all the auto choke and fast idle stuff can be done without if it does not work well! use the choke manually alone.
I do need to see if that motor operating the fast idle works or not...but I think that is for when the engine is warm only?

Re: oil metering pump , carb etc
The oil metering pump should move freely. Test it with one end of the linkage disconnected.
If there is resistance when the linkage is reconnected then the linkage has likely been bent out of shape. it will need to be tweaked slightly in certain areas for clearance.
The 'fast idle' motor is actually a hot start assist device. It is only there for emissions purposes and is not needed. The motors tend to fail eventually anyway so there is no harm in disconnecting the motor and linkage for disposal. Make sure the arm on the carb that the cable was attached to does not foul anything. Best remove it or fold and secure with a cable tie.

Re: oil metering pump , carb etc
Hi Kiwidave,
Thanks for your help on this. The metering pump is free now, carb off. The lever was virtually seized, but the car had stood for many years. I will clean it up further and lubricate...because it was stiff whwn the throttle opened and operated the link rod it was binding on return enough to prevent the throttle fully closing, by varying amounts. This led to the various off throttle pedal speeds it was displaying!!
I will check the oil feed for calibration as per manual when the carb is back on and it is running.

Re: oil metering pump , carb etc
thanks or that, it answers my question as to whether to keep the oil pump or not. So premix at 100:1 is used by you. Probably more reliable and better oil too than used engine oil from the engine.
I have not looked yet, is the pump easy to remove/cap off or is it best left on but plug the pipes?

Re: oil metering pump , carb etc
very nice, it looks very like a jap motorcycle pump. Our car is same colour as yours...not as minty under the bonnet though! my daughter was supposed to put some pics up. I will check its function initially, perhaps disconnect and run on premix then whilst we get the car up and together before moving onto improvement projects.
