Apparently the old metal has been cut away and replaced with new metal and welded in place. From what i can see it looks like a neat job but not sure if it will give the right level of structural integrity.
Ian, I would be interested to know how this rust damage compared to the car you decided to scrap.

Here's a new spot on Ebay.
Series 3 in green with grey interior. Doesn't look too good but apparently runs and drives. I have seen worse.
No reserve auction.
The reg no. looks familiar but I am sure Ian will confirm in due course
