Oil sump removal

Does anyone have an easy way of doing this? I want to remove the sump, replace the gasket and apply sealant in the correct manner. The application procedure in covered in the Haynes manual from memory.

Can I just remove the connecting bar from the steering for access or do I need to raise the motor for clearance? Any tips/tricks welcome.

I've never changed one in situ, only with the engine out ..... but, I have changed half a dozen sumps on these engines, I've never used a gasket, only RTV and I've never had a leak

The sump has been weeping ever since the motor went in and I'm not brave enough to tighten them down any further.

I have a new gasket from RockAuto that's been sitting in its nice packaging forever so I thought I may as well get it done

I'm going to change out the bolts for studs. I got a kit from Essex Rotary.

I'd rather not remove the motor but then again, it is the easiest way to get at the thing for sure.

Dave remove the connecting bar and raise the motor for clearance. Loosen the sump. Befor you can remove it you have to loose the oil pick-up pipe for getting out the sump. I have done this very often.Training this and you will get more and more faster

As Thomas says, it can be done once the oil pick up is removed.
Makes the job easier if you can beg, steal or borrow an engine support beam to hold the engine from above

Thankyou for the advice guys. I'm pretty sure my tame garage buddy has an engine support beam.
