Front Bottom Ball Joints

Post by Johnnyboy »

The gaiter on one of mine is split, and apart from the implications to the joint I understand that is now an MOT fail....

I could get a new gaiter,http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Prothane-19-1 ... 4843e76290... but by the time I have taken it apart... and it is 30 years old... and I don't know how long it has been split....

Should I buy a pair of these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-RX7-GLC ... 25568ff8f0

and what are these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1979-91-Mazda ... 4399798b90

All suggestions wellcome.

Well, put a new boot on if you want. Anything like this will do http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MASSEY-FERGUS ... 27c2153084
Just check the dimensions you need. Wack some fresh grease in there, work it around and they should be fine. I would only change it if MOT man says it's had it. And if he does I've got loads of spares.

Those last ones are just urethane boots instead of rubber.

I've got 40+ year old ball joints, that sat for years without any boots. Greased em. Put new boots on. Straight through MOT no problems.
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

If you buy new bottom ball joints like these....

you'll need to get the old ones presses out, the new ones pressed in and then tack welded
