Re: £50 Genuine mazda oil filter
Mazda still sell them for a couple of pounds each? Same as MX-5 ones I believe. That's what I use

Re: £50 Genuine mazda oil filter
Any reason for this? Is it just an oil capacity thing? I have used both large and smaller types and not seen a difference in oil pressure and the oil doesn't seem to get dirty in rotary engines much anyway, although I still change every couple of thousand miles.

Re: £50 Genuine mazda oil filter
The early rotary engines all used the tall filters. I believe the S3 was the first to run the smaller filter although someone may know otherwise.
I still use the tall filter on my S3 simply because that's what I have a stock of and they will fit in spite of the beehive oil cooler.
I'm not sure if the shorter version is any more efficient ... I'm sure somebody will know.

Re: £50 Genuine mazda oil filter
S3 came with large filter originally. The smaller type came in some time around the original MX5. Mazda has different OEM suppliers for oil filters depending on where you are. They often get local OEM to make them and brand them Mazda. The part numbers change every few years too. What you get from Mazda might be different in Europe or US compared to Japan etc. As such, you might find that the Mazda one is actually made by and identical to Bosch or other aftermarket brand.

Re: £50 Genuine mazda oil filter
Interesting and helpful info there. I really miss the old parts catalogs that would cross reference a whole bunch of part numbers and manufacturers. Back in the day, you could get the older issues at your local library. I'd check them out and make a note of the RX stuff. Sometimes I could save a bunch of time and money with a visit to my local mitsubishi or toyota dealer.KYPREO wrote: ↑Mon Oct 22, 2018 10:41 pm S3 came with large filter originally. Re: £50 Genuine mazda oil filter
As advised by old Mazda dealer. Can’t remember why exactly.

Re: £50 Genuine mazda oil filter
Red rubber inside the 8 holes of the K&N show the return valve. Both oilfilter show the bypass valve inside but different number of oilpassages.
