I found that if you just change one, it's usually enough to hold the hatch up. No worries with the electricles that way.

Re: Rear hatch struts - regas as good as new
I'll give that some thought, as the current pair are so nearly able to do the job.

KIMI 2 : 1st Gen, 1983 silver S2 - now sold to Ian Mothersole on here.
KIMI 3 : 1st Gen, 1983 red S3

Re: Rear hatch struts - regas as good as new
SGS quote was as follows:
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your enquiry. New struts are available at a cost of £78.34 for the pair delivered (£29.99 per strut plus £5.30 carriage and VAT), they are covered by a two year guarantee and are available on next day delivery. In the event of an order please supply the part number that is printed on the tube of the original gas strut.
Some struts can be re-gassed depending on their condition so a visual inspection by us must be made in order to assess your struts, which is free of charge. If you try a re-gas and it fails within the warranty period we will discount the cost of the re-gas from new gas struts purchased from SGS Engineering. A re-gas is £60.36 delivered for the pair (£20.50 per strut plus £5.30 carriage and VAT) and struts are usually turned around within three working days.
I then phoned SGS and spoke to "Robert". He didn't fill me with confidence! SGS were not interested in transferring over electrics to new struts and claimed the old struts would be needed as they'd have to remove the fittings at one end from old to transfer to new
Regassing seemed the better option, but that was relatively expensive. If it didn't work I'd be forced to go down the new route with SGS anyway.
So, I had a look on RockAuto and saw they had the "Strongarm" ones that Gregory mentioned on this topic. Price just £8.26 each, plus shipping at around £13; much cheaper than SGS
. Decided to order two, but hoping one would be enough as there are consistent reports everywhere that they are very powerful. So, plan is to keep the passenger side in-situ, with new one on driver side, with a spare strut, just in case!
Whilst I was at it, I ordered a few other bits to make the order worthwhile

I've used the Strongaarm struts, they are fine, do a good job and I think swapping the electrics might be easier than you think. (not that I have done it !)

Re: Rear hatch struts - regas as good as new
Switching the electrics is simple but you need to cut the end off the RHS strut to get it off.
If that frightens you, do passenger side first and see how that goes.
I'll grab details of the heat shrink tube i used to hide tge wiring, as i still have the leftover in my shed...
