Series 3 stereo/EQ/joystick and fascia

Hi

I'm new to the forum, but thought I would put my feelers out for the following parts. I am on the hunt locally and the US but I thought I'd try here too. I'm after:

* factory Clarion headunit from series 3 RX-7
* equaliser
* balancer/fader joystick
* uncut fascia with mounting holes in tact for factory stereo.

I have a custom fibreglass centre console trimmed in black vinyl with aftermarket stereo and 3x 2 5/8" gauges angled up at the driver (water temp, oil temp, oil pressure). I am upgrading the ECU and will be replacing the mechanical gauges with a software gauge solution on an Android tablet, so I am looking to revert the console to factory appearance.

I need a working headunit, but I'm ok if the joystick and EQ aren't 100% as I already have these items and can mix/match parts that I need.

I am in Australia but obviously would pay for shipping in addition to purchase price.

I am also willing to swap for my setup, shown here, which is probably better suited than the factory setup to someone who wants to race:

may have located an uncut fascia, EQ, joystick and an incomplete deck.

If anyone has a deck I'd be interested, even if it's not working internally as i may be able to use it for the bits missing off the other deck.

So really just after a headunit now.

all UK series 3 cars came with the Clarion E950 stereo which is a single din fitting...

Thanks for that info Ian. The clarion e950 was the factory fitted head unit on the bottom spec "Sport" model sold in Australia (of which very few were actually made). A version of it was also standard on JDM series 3s depending on spec level.

The one I'm after is a Clarion PT-9031C. It was definitely available as an option in the UK as dean's car has it (pictured above), as have several other UK series 3s I've seen online. I also recall seeing it in a UK brochure online once.

It was also available on s3 in Japan and 1983 s2 GSL in the US as well, although different model numbers due to their different radio bandwidths. Australia and other Commonwealth countries share the same radio system as the UK.

Ps i guess that nevertheless makes my prospects of finding one in the UK or mainland Europe even more remote, so thank you again

I'd be interested in finding out a definitive answer to this. In all the years I've been around these cars I've never seen a UK S3 with that stereo option fitted from new.... they all had the E950. The Clarion E950 was fitted as standard to many top end cars back in the 80's such as Jaguar XJ's, Range rover Vogues etc and was viewed as a premium stereo at the time.
It was a strange phenomenon in the UK back in the day.... as soon as single din stereos came out, nobody wanted the old spindle type...almost overnight, you couldn't give them away.... Mazda would have had a hard sell to pull out the latest single din Clarion and replace it with the old spindle type Clarion even if it was bundled with an equaliser and a joystick.
The original UK brochure for the series 3 featured it with no mention of an upgrade being available...





Which brochure did you see it in? I've only ever seen that setup in US market S2 cars ('82&'83)

The setup in Deans car was probably retro fitted, same as the mirrors.

Does anyone know if this stereo package ( Stereo. equaliser and joystick was offered as an option by Mazda UK or as a dealer installed option. Its a pity Robert Grounds from 3 Spires Mazda isn't on here, he'd know the answer to that.
I've looked through the 1st gen dealer technical bulletins and there's no mention of a stereo upgrade for the S3.

It's interesting, I'd love to find out for definite.

yes Pete, it seems to have been an option on the UK S2 cars ( or '82's and 83's in the States) but I've never known it on UK S3's
