New member from the US, not new to FB's :)

Post by pandafb »

Hi Everyone, Name is Sean, and I've owned and worked on Fb's for more than 10 years now, and recently started searching out more information on the non-us spec'd cars. In that search I found this site so I decided to join since theres a lot of good info on here :) I could ramble on for a bit about my history with these cars, but I'll just post a few pics and give a quick rundown.

First up is my 83 GS (GS is basically the middle of the road for the US cars, at least in 83. Had a few options, but no LSD or rear disks, and the sunroof was an extra - which this one has) I got this car from a junkyard in 2002, it had no wheels on it and barely ran. The good thing is that it still had a valid title, and most of the car was complete. $300 later and it was mine. Initial plans of just getting it running took a backseat, and it sat for about 2 years. In late 2003, early 2004 I tore it down to a shell, and began teaching myself bodywork, welding, metal fabrication etc and started restoring the car. (I don't have any in progress shots on this computer, but can get some if anyone cares) I also decided to go with a black/white "panda" paint scheme (car was originally sunrise red - RH) I registered and insured it on February 6, 2006 and have been daily driving it ever since (in the nice weather that is) It is a 12a, with a Racing Beat exhaust, has tokico shocks and Eibach springs along with some other minor "bolt on" mods, nothing too crazy, just a fun solid car.

Next is my first car (technically not, but I consider it as such) an 83 S (s is the base model for the US cars) which I got back in 2001, used it as my daily driver through High school and much of college, and in 2006 (once the panda FB was done) I took it off the road, tore it apart and started restoring it. At that point all the road salt had done a number on it, and a bunch of metal work and patching was needed (again no pics here, will get some) A few months into the build I came across a good used JDM S5 T2 engine which had the ECU, wiring and transmission all for about $1000. I had some extra money at that point and figured then was as good a time as any to dive into a swap, since the car was already in pieces. Well, the car has gone through many iterations since then, but as it sits now it's got a FC front subframe (crossmember, steering, control arms etc) the S5 T2 engine/transmission (which came with a knighsports turbo! :)) 3" downpipe out to a racing beat muffler, T2 brakes front and rear and BBS wheels from a FC vert. Theres a bunch of other stuff done to it as well, but thats the major stuff. I repainted the car black (again an RH sunrise red car) but honestly have regretted that since day 1. This spring I will be re-shooting it Red.

Anyway, here are a few pics!

Hi, Sean, welcome and all that. Love the cars, that panda Trueno err... FB colourscheme suits it so well, lol. Just missing "Fujiwara Tofu Shop" decals on the doors. Only kidding, it really fits the car perfectly, looks brilliant. The black one looks tough, I like the front airdam arrrangement on it. Oh, and the engine, obviously 8-)

Hi and welcome.

Two good looking cars you have there. Sounds like a good restoration story - and yes I would love to see some pictures of the rebuilds, and so I am sure would others on here.

What gives with Killington when your Tag is New Jersey? I learned to ski in Killington a long time ago - shared a ski lodge for the winter and commuted up from Connecticut every Friday afternoon (in a 79 Trans Am and a Jeep CJ7 - RX7's were too expensive for me then and besides, I was taking the opportunity to enjoy everything quintessentially American....) so you have brought back some good memories..... Happy days...

So thanks already!

Hi Sean. I don't know anything about the States, so I figured Killington was NJ.....woops.

Anyway, welcome aboard....Codge

Lol, the pic of the Panda is from a trip I took to Vermont last year. It was the only recent pic of the car I could find when I was making the post. I'll have to find more local pics, although they will look similar since the part of NJ I live in is very similar to Vermont (woods, hills etc) not the typical cement jungle that most of NJ is.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, I'm looking forward to seeing what the FB life is like on the other side of the Atlantic :)

Both cards were extensivly restored, stripped down to nothing but a bare shell (including removal of the wiring, glass etc) and built up from there. I'll get some pictures tonight off my home computer and post them up!

Lucky: Funny you should mention Trueno's since thats what my current project car is, restoring a 86 AE86 hatch and swapping in a Rotary as well. I guess i've got the makings of an Initial D fleet in my yard lol.

johnnyboy: Sounds like a good time, and I laughed when you said you drove a 79 T/A to sample everything American. Trans Am's were the unofficial car of NJ for what seemed like forever. My first car (still have it actually) is an 82 Trans Am. Back in the day you would see those things everywhere around here!

Hi Sean,
welcome to the forum.... great to get another US based owner on here...
Loving your cars too... how do you rate the fc subframe swap? worth the effort? I've thought about doing that in the past to change to rack and pinion steering.

Great to have you on board.

cheers,
Ian

Hi there Sean. I'd be really interested to keep up with the AE86 project. I owned an ex Group A racer for a year or so back in NZ. A rotary powered AE86 is my dream project.
And I like the idea of the FC front subframe swap in your FB, a lot of us dream about rack and pinion up front (well I do at least, it's normal right)???
Anyways, a warm welcome to you

regards
Dave.

Thanks again for the warm welcome everyone! I think all SA/FB owners want to get rid of the stock steering lol. Personally I love the FC subframe swap on my car. It does have a bit of bumpsteer, but there are kits to eliminate that, which I plan to get over this winter. Really the only downsides to the subframe swap (if you consider them as such) are the loss of the 4x110 lug pattern, and mounting a 12a in there would take some fab work.
If you have the 4x114.3 lug pattern (do all the UK S3 cars have this?? In the US only the GSL-SE has the 4x114) then you could use the 4 lug FC hubs and not have to change anything in the rear end. FC's (at least here) had 3 different racks to choose from, so you have 3 different ratios you can go with. The trans mount takes a bit of customization if you are using a turbo box, other wise a complete FC engine/trans will just drop right in, makes engine swaps very easy. An added bonus is that there are companies who make mounting adaptors to bolt a 13B-REW or even 20B into a FC, so now these are "easy" swaps into the FB (easy in that they will bolt in at least lol)
As far as effort involved, if you can cut and weld then you can do this swap. I actually did a writeup on rx7club about it, althought I'll admit it's a bit wordy and light on pictures, it gives you an idea of whats involved. I chose to take a slightly more difficult path in that I wanted to retain FB sturts and springs and make everything look as if it was stock. If you went with FC coil overs you would have less work to do, although more money would be involved. I think total I only spent about $400 on this, most of it came from various junkyards/parts cars.
Here is the link for those who are curious (oh and my username on there is 82transam, was my first car and I wanted to be different lol): http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=967834
Once I post a build thread about my Rotary AE86 somewhere I'll post the link for you KiwiDave. It should be a fun car, although getting the engine where I want it has been a challenge, at the moment its resting on the steering rack, still some work to be done there.
BTW if anyone has questions about US FB's let me know!

Hi Sean,
A very warm welcome chap. Great work on the motors and I think the black and wheels of the first car really suits it. I am currently working on an SA, a full strip down rebuild and weld fabricate learning experience at the same time :D
The great thing about this forum is the fact there is great advice and loads of knowledge plus plenty inspiration ;)

Welcome again
