Fast road RX-7 restoration

Post by Keefyboy »

Right it's time to start a thread about the resto of my RX-7,I bought this car last year late February, off eBay I paid £650 and from Chelmsford in Essex.
I was very pleased to own my first fb, even tho it's been off the road for 10 years or more the 12a fired right up with a pair of jump leads!
Most impressed but a busy year has halted any works on getting the old gal freshened up and out on the road.
So over the Christmas break I decided to crack on which entailed removing the front and rear end off a spares car to give mine 114.3 flexibility on wheel choice, then got mine into the garage and up on the 2 post ramp to see what I've got to deal with!

So far I've managed to remove the rear axle and link bars, had a go with my sandblaster and wire wheeled the underneath, checked for rust around the screen and under the spoiler, both seem fine which is a relief!
Fuel tank has been binned as its just too rotten, and made a start with sorting the rear panel work.
All suspension parts will be sent to the blasters soon then painted ready for new bushes etc.
More to come slowly but surely as I can't wait to get this motor on the road!

Nice project Keith, good to see another build thread on here and another RX7 getting some tlc.
The rear valance is still available from Mazda I think..... one of our members, Cliff, bought one for his project car..... not wanting to spam your build thread but these photos might help you as they show how Cliff unpicked the rear valance along the factory seams....even if you cut a repair panel out of your donor car, it helps to see how the panels were originally attached

Here's the part number....

Ordered as:-
D Code No. 70 791A
Description Panel Skirt. Rear
Part No. FA01-70-791
Price: £41

and the pics.....

looking forward to seeing your progress with this car.... it's good news about the windscreen surround, that's a tricky area to repair if it's very corroded.

No worries on spamming mate, we all love pictures! I tried at my local Mazda dealers (Nottingham) and they couldn't find one on there system, I've unpicked a half decent one off our spares car but would love a new one. It's repairing the lower rear quarters that's going to be a pain!

Mazda main dealers are pretty useless in respect of these cars....most no longer have the parts microfiche any more....... you need to go to them with the part number and then they can search the dealer parts bin and find out what's available..... Cliffs valance came from Europe via a Mazda dealer in Cheshire.
If you look in the library section of the forum you can download the factory parts catalogue for your car which gives you the part numbers.... these are what you need to take to a dealership.

Hey Keith. I don't suppose you have the Reg No. and Colour of the doner car?
I can see if it's on the register and move it to 'Scrappers' if it's not there already.

cheers

I did use the Mazda part numbers but still no joy! Maybe they're using updated software?

Welcome to the forum aye. Glad to see you've already started a build thread! :D The car is looking pretty good except that rear valance. Mine has a few surface rust patches on. Didn't realise they made new panels. Any other panels we can buy brand new?
