GSL-SE in Tennessee

Post by Spannerhead »

Hi all. New member here (obviously). I'm a rotary enthusiast from way back; I lusted after the FD as a lad, and combining a pair of FBs into one good car was my first real project in college.

After a circuitous car journey through Supra Country, the Principality of Audi and finally BMW Land (with a rather long exile in the latter), I've "come home" to an '85 GSL-SE about a month ago.

I'm on the first-generation RX-7 e-mail list and that other forum, but I figured another can't hurt, right? :)

Pleased to be here!

Thanks for the warm welcome, gents. :D For the record, I don't have a bone to pick with any of the outlets for first-gen rotary discussion on the web; I'm just interested in talking about them more!

Anyway, here she is. Quite neglected by the previous owners, I'm trying to breathe new life into her. The previous owner is a local guy with a pair of GSL-SEs, and he decided to keep his blue one and sell me the red one. Unfortunately he isn't too handy and I inherited the car in quite a sorry state. The previous owner before him was a smoker, so I've spent much of my time cleaning out ashes, restoring the interior plastic and vinyl and shampooing carpets and seats. She's come quite a ways from when I first brought her home, but she's still got a ways to go.

One of the first pics. Exterior hasn't changed much. I haven't even given her a bath:

Lots of cosmetic work to do on the exterior. Last weekend I picked up all the body panels I need from a local guy parting out his '82:

A bodyshop owner two doors down from me quoted me a really good price to do a sand, block, fill and respray assuming I do all the "hard" prep work like removing fenders (wings to you Brits :) ) and trim and rub strips.

I've removed the window tint (hate that stuff):

The car is a very late-production '85 with the bronze-tinted glass and body-colored mirrors.

Here's the current state of the interior:

She's getting there! Wish me luck! :)

(for some reason my pics are getting cropped on the right, but you get the idea...)

Did you not get the graphic equalizer over there? All our '84-'85 GSLs (highest-trim 12A) and GSL-SEs got 'em.

I'd like mine better if the stereo actually...worked. But thanks.

Yeah the guy I got the bodywork from said I could have the ventiports free! Nice of him, no? :D

...but seriously I'm just glad they're stick-on. Heh.

All UK cars were to the same spec, choice of colour that's all.
Oh and there was an Elford Turbo option plus a few bolt ons from Elford. That was all approved by Mazdsa but carried out in UK to order.

Our Stereo fitment on the UK Series 3 cars was a simple but good Clarion cassette player/ radio.
Ours still works but we rarely use it. The cassette player is probably not up to much now.
The electric aerial is still a hoot though.
