FB S1/2 or FC oil cooler

Post by Marc S »

Hi guys,

Ian has pointed out to me that I'll need to upgrade my oil cooling when I fit the Elford turbo. I guess it's not a show stopper, as I will be able to get it fitted and running with the beehive, but I don't want to not fit a better cooler straight away, and then leave it too long, if you know what I mean!

If anyone has one, please let me know.

Alternatively, and maybe temporarily, I have been looking on fleabay, and was tempted with something like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120961060688? ... 1423.l2649

Would my job be easier if I had the FC pipes, or will these "universal" ones mate to the 12A?

If the ebay one is better than the beehive, I'll give it a go, and keep on the lookout for an FC one... :?

Oil lines are generally measured in AN- sizes, which is some unbelievably arcane Imperial (American) measurement based on witchcraft and percentage of inches ratio of internal to external diameter or some such nonsense. *ahem* anyway. You probably want at least -10AN size hoses, which means you'll need the equivalent -10AN fittings at either end of each line (my research would recommend Torques as a very good halfway house between quality and price... less than half the price of Goodridge or Earls but nearly the same quality) at about ~£18 per end. Then you'll need an adaptor to mate the AN line size to the metric thread MAzda use. Although being Mazda, they use different threads of course. The return size thread to the rear plate is an M18x1.5 pitch thread. The front cover housing from the oil pump is an M16x1.5. So you need two adaptors for those, -10AN to Mwhatever, at around £15 ish. Then you need two adaptors the other end to mate the line to the oil cooler, whatever they actually are. On an FC oil cooler they are M18x1.5

Please note I have no idea what the fitting sizes are on a Series 3 setup; I haven't bothered trying to measure cos I'm using an earlier engine cos then I can delete all the beehive nonsense without having spurious coolant pipes bridged and left over. They may be different to the measurements I've just given. Anyway, by my calculations the lines and fittings will be setting me back around 130 quid ... not including the oil cooler. You could pretty much double that if you use Goodridge fittings

Clear as mud? The oil system on a rotary really isn't somewhere you want to cut corners, sadly

The universal ones don't have a thermostat in them either, this is needed as the oil is think when cold and if forced through the cooler can pop stuff.

Buy this instead: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/221397636268?nav=SEARCH

Take what you need. Split the rest with Garath. He wants the rear bumper and alloy bonnet for sure.

Thanks guys, I'll go for that one on ebay, thanks for the link bud :)

Bit confused by all the different hose fittings...I found some FC pipes for sale, would it be worth getting them?

Ok, so I've found some fittings, double ended threads from M16 to 10AN etc...and can see from the pic that the oil cooler has one male thread and one female - it seems that there is already an adaptor in there? I'll know more when it arrives of course...I'm pretty sure the cooler has M16 fittings...

With the hose itself, I have found hose, and ends...is it safe to make them up, or should I be looking at getting them pre-assembled? I'd be happy to screw some ends onto some hose...but it's a big risk if the joints fail, don't want to play this replacement engine game again too soon :?

I'll measure up properly once I get the cooler fitted, but what sort of lengths are we talking here? I can't picture it in my head...don't want to order 3 metres of hose

If you mean that FC oil cooler on eBay then the fitting sizes are M18x1.5. Like I said in my previous post ;)
