first rotary experience

hi everybody

My name´s ruben, i´m from belgium and i bought an rx7 form 85 about a year ago.

I bought an rx7 because i´d never seen a rotary engine up close and i´ve always found it interesting.

And i was trying to figure out if i was gonna buy an fd or fb, but i chose the fb because i thought it would be more fun

But i soon found out there weren´t any fb´s on the market here in belgium that were in good shape so i went ahead and bought that needed some work :p

The initial plan was to make it run properly and make it fast :p,
along the way plans changed .

So i started to totally restore the car tearing the whole car down and as i began to do some research i bought and elford turbo kit so it would be pretty fast and in the same time nice to drive too.

But since it´s my first rotary and don´t know so much about it so i thought i would learn by talking to the more experienced people at this forum, so if you guys have any tips or info i should know about please let me know

Hi Ruben, welcome. Looks like a good project, looking forward to updates

I'm lucky enough to have an FD and an FB and I can confirm the FB is just as much fun to drive and just as satisfying to modify. It's fast enough to be good, just at a lower speed if that makes sense. An Elford turbo kit seems the best way to have the best of both worlds

I´ve been working on the car for a year now so as far as the updates go i´d better start with the things that are already done.

i totally stripped the car first and send all of the suspension parts to the sandblaster got em back and then painted it all black,
the body was in bad shape it had rust on the bottom and especially at the jacking points in the rear and in the wheel arches left and right. So i cutted all the rust out and welded clean metal back in also removed all of the surface rust on the bottom .

The body also had a lot of dings and dents on it so i fixed them as well, so next step i painted the car in black not the original black colour but i can´t tell the difference so :p

I sandblasted all the small stuff myself brackets and stuff painted them black as well

I´m now at the point of putting it all back together so i already fitted the rear axle and suspension, front suspension, engine and gearbox.

Rims just got back from the local tyre shop they look as good as new ang got toyo tires fitted

Altough i doubt if the rims and tyre size are original maybe you do ?

the tires are 195/60 r14 on the rear and 185/60 r14 in the front

But anyway know i´m just waiting to get some parts so i can put the car on wheels en get the engine started up, but i´ll first have to figure out how to run the oil lines with the new elford conversion

I don´t have a lot of pics of the whole project but i´ll try to find as many as possible to show some of the work

Have you ever on the Dutch forum looked?
Here are also called belgie members on and that are members of the Dutch rx7 club.
We organize another Dutch rotary stock at 7-7. 13 in Lelystad.
You can get there in short for registration so if you have your rx as far as you're welcome.
For parts, you can always email me I have several rx demolished so many Parts.

yes i´ve seen the dutch forum before but i never signed in because i usually don´t spend a lot of time on the computer but since
i quit one job i have a lot more time now so i´ll defenitly do that. :d

and i´d love to come to the meet in lelystad i´f i can get the car in order by then :p

It's 1985? Yes.

If so, we say it is 1st Generation RX7 Series 3.

The wheels in your pic are not standard series 3, but you know that already I think.
The standard tyre size was 205 60 X 14".......but quite a few people fit narrower size for ease because 205 is hard to find now.

I think fitting smaller width is trouble in UK - (Insurance Companies are very troublesome), but other people do not think so.
