Mazda RX-7 - 1979 Birmingham University Rally - Robert Grounds & Peter Joel. Finished 14th.

This car was the earliest known RX7 to arrive in the UK. It was shipped from the US ( who got the RX7 a year before the UK) by British Leyland for evaluation against their sports car, the TR7. Robert Grounds then bought the car from BL.

It's laughable to think that the execs at BL sat around a table after a drive in the SA and thought "yup, we done ourselves proud - the TR7 is a worthy competitor". Probably the same wisdom that blessed us with the Princess, Maxi and Allegro.

Wonder where the british car industry went wrong eh.
