I have my brothers (past away) 84 1/2 RX7 GSL-SE 13b. I am trying to find out how many were built in Hiroshima. My vin#JM1FB3326E0841475.
Was there any built here in the US & are the paint codes different?

There were around 15000 GSL-SEs made I think, but that's only from what I have read online. I think all rotary engine mazdas were built in Hiroshima, non produced in America or elsewhere. Paint codes can be found on the forum if you do a search. There was a Japanese market only model of the Savanna which had a fuel injected 13B, so very similar to a GSL-SE, but GSL-SE was only available in North America.

I always thought that only the GSL-SE got the injected 13b engine and that the JDM Savanna was a 12a turbo

Agreed Ian. 13B was US only. It was a marketing decision to keep the RX7 competitive in their marketplace whilst waiting for the FC replacement.

12a turbo was JDM only. The rotary turbo was still experimental at that stage and Mazda decided to keep it local and iron all the problems out as factory support was readily available in the local market. JDM HB Cosmo coupe got 12aT power as well.

My respect for the elford turbo set up at that stage. Looks like mazda must have to copie the turbo and rear spoiler idea from the elford people?

Sorry I got confused with the HB Cosmo that came with a 13B EFI, like the GSL-SE. The japanese only market Cosmo had loads of engine options, 12A 6port with carburettor (I have one of these engines), 12A turbo EFI, 13B 6 port RESI EFI.

Cosmo was also the badge reserved for rotary only at that time so,it got the 12aT. It was Japan's fastest production car for a while. I remember a car yard back home, at the beginning of the Jap import craze. 3 in a line 2 Luce sedans, i with 12a 6 port, 1 with 13b and a black cosmo coupe with 12aT. Test drove them all and ended up putting on my sensible hat and driving away with a TE55 corolla levin

Do you have the factory black air filter housing with '12a six port induction' decal? It's larger than the blue box of God.
