Audi suggested this a few years back with a single rotor range extender for the concept, A1 e-tron.
Now mazda have given the green light for latest incarnation of the rotary engine

If it is as small as they say, then it will lend itself to lots of other applications so may find itself being used elsewhere.
I do remember reading (though I can not remember where) that Toyota had trialled something similar in Japan but the vehicles kept being brought back to the dealer with charging problems, it was said that the drivers did not realise there was a petrol engine responsible for recharge as it was so quiet & were not putting petrol in? It makes you wonder how they thought it was charging?

Its great the rotary lives on. But unless you can enjoy the high racing sound of the engine or Bridgeport the rotary then is it a bit pointless for us enthusiasts?
For us surely a rotary with an electric engine to boost midrange and economy would be idea?
On a separate note it looks great...
