Drain holes

Post by DelMonte »

Gave my drain holes a good hoovering and clean this morning.

Anyone know where the sun roof drain holes drain to?

The front sun roof drain holes run down the A pillars and come out behind the front wings, about 9" in front of the doors.

The rear sunroof drains come out of the black plastic vents on the rear edge of the B pillar.

While I'm typing the rear hatch drains come out behind the rear bumper.

Sorry Steve, can I make a correction please. For years I used to think the sun roof drains went into the rear arches somewhere and that's what caused the common rotting problem. Not so. There are good quality rubber tubes in the 'B' pillars right down to the bottom of the car; not usually any problem. I know from when I scrapped an S3 and cut it apart.
I think I remember rightly, flame me if I'm wrong.

The rotting out is caused - first by the reinforcing plates flexing under axle side loads, this cracks the sealant - mud, salt and water gets behind the plates then bingo, instant rot through into the rear tub.
(I'm certainly on the ball with this major First Gen problemo).

I can add a bit to this...
I still have a section of 'B' post from the s2 I stripped earlier in the year that I saved for the quarter light glass and by cutting away the outer skin, we can see that the rear sunroof drain ( the rubber hose sticking out of the top) goes into the top of the plastic thing and then discharges out of the 'vent' as Steve says

I was worried my car was broken for a minute there, as when i pour water on the sun roof it comes out those vents!

Maybe an s2 vs s3 thing?

Oooooo-kay  An enquiring mind is a terrible curse lol

This is handy stuff as I've just been pigging about trying to get my sunroof out :o Several gallooons of WD later the rubber clips at the front edge finally relinquished their hold. Then I found out I don't have anything long, strong and flexible enough to prod all the way down the drains. Now I know where the rear ones end up, maybe that's why

S3's are the same.... poured some water on my sunroof and it comes out of the vent.

lol, don't have a strimmer. Figured the wire that holds my garage door counterweights will do nicely though. Got some left over from when one snapped this year and dropped the roof on my head

Wow, popped online after a day out and some great info again! I would have never thought those rear vents were for the roof drain! Amazing.....
