Engine running rough

Hi guys, need a bit of help here. I was out for a spin a while ago with my dad. It was great, lot of fun. But 5 minutes from home it was like someone flicked a switch, the engine coughed and poor Reva was being choked on power, maybe fuel starved? :| just about wheezed up our steep hill. It just runs very rough, not stalling though.
I don't know is it the carb (my first thought, was low on fuel so it might have sucked gunk into the jets??) mechanics have said it could be a block in the exhaust, all leads and spark plugs are fine.

Any suggestions what my first course of action should be? I'm tempted to play with the carb, the internets says that's a last resort... should I buy a carb rebuild kit? or consider anything else?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

When was the fuel filter last changed?

Replaced it once the engine started running rough. I gave the car to a mechanic after it happened, because I'm away at college. He said there was no spark to one of the plugs, but thats now been sorted. The car ran slightly better after that.

Fuel Pump? Can you hear it running? Plenty of fuel being pumped through to carb?
Does it idle smoothly? Is it running on both Rotors?

Fuel pump is ok, it idles like a pig. The car does run on both rotors, I just checked for fuel flow. Could'nt see much fuel from one of the jets? :?

1. Fuel problem - you've pulled some crap into the carb. Strip it, clean it, check filter again, clean tank, change pump etc.

2. You've blown the motor.

Hopefully it's 1.

Yeah I hope it's 1... I'll order a carb rebuild kit anyway and start getting to work. Thank you for the help guys!
