Me and my 7.

After searching high and low for a 79 rx7 to turn into a race car, i gave up and bought an 83 a reg s2 that was a one owner car but rotten in the usual places. This was mot'd and taxed, the year was 2005. I then saw a 79 which ticked the big box and I took my son up with me and it was an amazing car! A deal was done and I collected it in early 2006. I just used it for weekends, the odd show, going to watch race meetings and a trip to Le Mans Classic in 2008. The engine was fine when used frequently but when left it was a pig to start as the oil control rings were knackered. I eventually put theory into practice and built a mongrel of an engine using turbo housings and centre plate with 6 port end plates. The ports were opened up and to make sure they would be ok i cut down an eccentric shaft and built up a half motor with a template of the ports to watch were the side and corner seals went (not dropping out!). I assembled the engine and installed it about 5 years ago and its still fantastic! Running through a weber ida and straight through exhaust system the car was livened up substantially. I was able to purchase Brian's race car components and the suspension was up graded along with the back axle and brakes. Thankfully rust has never been an issue and although the paint is faded it still cleans up well but could do with a nice paint job to make it immaculate.
I have a mate who deals in Ferrari exotics and he likes it as it is. Another kiwi mate thinks it should be put back to standard but i enjoy the brisk performance, sound and the way it handles.
I have been into classic cars since i could walk, dad had some lovely cars and still does. With 3 children I need to balance my interests and having hankered after a Citroen hy Pig van i bought one which is still in the south of France. This will be a big project, even getting it back will require a good plan but it will be something worth while.
I have read many articles here and enjoy seeing what you guys do with the 7s. Well done, keep them going, one day they deserve to be worth proper money, they are still very underrated.

Hindsight! In about 2004 i went to look at a Porsche 911, 1965 semi prepped as a rally car, the asking price was £6k, it had a cage fitted and ran well with a tuned 2.2 motor. Why why why did i not buy that???? MAZDA Wankels !!! fantastic but what are they selling for now. 1000 maybe 3500 on a good day. Porsche 1965 911 pushing 100k. Bad judgement, I admit but I did have lots of fun wankeling around and I think both my cars were quicker than an early 911.
