Close Ratio Transmission with OE gears

Hey guys,

I've been looking at all the gearboxes that are available for the car, and I'd like to try to combine 2 different transmissions to get the ideal gear spread and RPM drops. I've worked with a few Hewland gearboxes (both H-pattern and sequential), and I know the stock gearboxes are way different. What I want to do is move a 2nd gear to 1st, 3rd to 2nd, 4th to 3rd, and use 2 different 5ths for the following 2 gears. Would it be possible to remove each individual gear from the input and layshafts, or are they made as one unit? Is this feasible or just a waste of time?

For the record, the gearing I want to use is 2.002, 1.366, 1.00, .825, and .691, all with a 4.44 final drive.

Thanks,
Jake

No idea. What's wrong with first gear?

I'm curious to know what the application is though.

Or you could take the available options and just not run the 4.44 final drive and achieve the same thing..

With a simple adapter plate Ford gearboxes fit, and a Type 9 is a common waiver for FBs in Motorsport. Quaife will do synchro and dog versions with various ratios. I currently run a Quaife 69G 6spd sequential - and very good it is too.

It all rather depends on what spec your car is, and what you are doing with it..

The car is a Chumpcar, so a stock appearing gearbox would be better. The 626 transmission is the acknowledged go-to for a close ratio box, but it has so weaknesses. This is a road race car, so all the usual 1st gears (and the one I'd have with my custom box) are too short. The advantage of this change in gearing would be lower RPM drops and more useful gears. Realistically, with the stock box, I may use 2nd in 1 corner of 5 different tracks I plan to race.

In addition, since these transmissions are also in the Miata, this could be something those guys would be interested in for some classes. I

Swap out the CWP for something taller.
