New member looking for his first FB!

Post by thecolonel »

Hi all,

I have been thinking of getting an FB for a little while now so figured the best place to get advice and tips, maybe even find a good one, would be on here!

Missed what looked like a really nice red one with wider track, black arches and a duck tail a little while ago. Having not owned one yet I was also interested to hear if warm up/cool down time are as important on the older rotary engines as it will be used for fun bursts round the local back roads mainly? :D

Thanks

Aaron

Hi Aaron,
I guess you're in UK? We've have a lot of members now who are overseas.

The older rotaries are just like piston engines as regards warm up etc. Take 'em steady until normal temperature is reached. Me....being an antique I keep on taking it steady after that but you personally don't have to....... th:

When you've finished just switch off. The 12A engines we use mostly are non turbo so no turbo cooling down required.

For an odd blast round UK country lanes.....great......just do 15/20 mile trips if you can to charge battery, and try and exercise the car every couple of weeks.

Key to long life is prompt oil changes (3000 miles for daily drives, more often if you only go out on occasion) and IT IS ESSENTIAL WITH THESE ROTARY ENGINES TO KEEP OIL AND WATER UP TO THE CORRECT LEVELS......or Boooooom!

Hi Codge,

Thanks for the info and welcome, yes I am UK based!

The FB will be to replace my old TVR, have fancied one for ages and can sell it as a more practical classic thanks to the extra seats

Welcome mate,
That red one you mentioned is on here now.
Don't believe everything you read about rotaries. There's no specific technique for starting or stopping, no matter what certain "other" forums will tell you
The cars are 30 years old now and parts availability amongst the community is pretty good. Outside it, you'll start to struggle.

I don't necessarily agree with changing the oil more often than 3000 miles either dude. Mind you, the red one has the OMP turned up and static so I burn it rather than change it. That's changing atm though ;)
Use good quality oil and the right grade, but as you say, keep the levels up!!!!
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

I heard it went to Monaco?

That's the kinda style I would like to achieve, clean and original lines with the fenders or flares and either a duck tail or Elford wing, or maybe even just smoothed boot!

Thanks on the engine info, mechanics never normally worry me but rotary is new to me, only reason I dont have an FD as a daily driver is my trip in to work only takes 10-15mins and isn't on particularly fast roads. Either need to move house, move job or take a very different route!
