Bit of a hiatus until today!

So I've whipped the air box off and can see the jets squirting fuel in to the carb. I also emptied out all the old fuel (god knows how long thats been in there) and put in a few litres of nice fresh stuff...

I noticed the throttle leaver cable seemed a bit loose so I tightened that up. gave it another go with lots of throttle and it spluttered a few times and a bit of smoke puffed out the exhaust, hey thats further than I've got so far... :)

Not sure what to check now - could old fuel still be stuck in the engine? How can I make sure its all cleared out?

Also in my general prodding I noticed the (semi) clear line going from the carb down to the front bottom of the engine casing was very oily at the engine end, is that normal?

Any help greatly appreciated as always!

Hi,
It sounds like a lot of oil & crap etc has built up inside, I would suggest you thoroughly clean all 4 plugs, soak in thinners for a hour or so, spin the engine over whilst plugs are out to clean & then replace & use some Easy Start straight into carb & she should fire up & once running I think she will be fine.

Put the plugs in an oven to heat them up - fit as quick as poss then, as said, blast some easystart down the carb whilst starting.
** Don't overtighten the plugs into the aluminium housings - 13 ft lb from memory in old measure.

Thanks for pointers - I'll give that a go tomorrow night after work and report back. Codge when you say heat in oven, what sort of heat are you talking about? just a minute or so on a very low heat?

Also do you need to be spraying the easy start down the carb at exactly the same time as turning over? or can you spray then run to ignition and turn over... If exactly the same time I'll need to get an assistant!

No Choke, if you are by yourself leave the lid on and spray into the air filter then turn ignition, someone is helping do not stand over the air box as it can backfire through the Carb & from experience walking around with singed facial hair is a good conversation topic :lol: :lol:

Plugs in oven.....they won't take any harm at vitually any temperatures.....lets say preheated to 180C and leave for 5 mins or so.
The problem comes sticking 'em back in the engine before they get back to cold.
Just work as quick as you can.....the plug centre core will hold heat for a while so don't rush but also don't waste time torquing them exactly. In this situation I'd just nip 'em gently since we're trying to get it fired up. Make sure your leads are on and in the right places.

Then blast some 'easystart down the carb (with the blue box lid unclipped) for a few seconds. count 1.....2.....3 something like that

Then clip back the lid.....saunter to the driver's seat like John Wayne = without a care in the world. Turn the key with maybe 1/4 choke, not really any more than that.

If the engine is reasonably OK she'll start. Then when you've satisfied yourself all's well switch off, let it cool then tighten plugs to 13 ft lb, no more!

Thanks Codge and DKW,

I've tried this out just now. Removed all plugs and turned it over, nothing seemed to splatter out at all. The plugs were brand new when I put them in a few months ago (or maybe last year..lost track..) but they looked slightly different, 1 looked matt black like it had been burnt, 2 were a bit oily and 1 looked like it hadn't been touched.

I baked them and put them back then did the 3 seconds of easy start, sadly no change.

Maybe they are in the wrong order? see image. As your looking at the image I numbered them left to right 1,2 top, 3,4 bottom. As your looking at the cables going from the plastic holder they go 1,2,3,4 from right to left. Are they on the right plugs?

Also, this is the small tubes I was referring to before that are very oily at the bottom. Is this normal?

Those "small tubes" are the lines from the Oil Metering Pump (OMP). They carry oil from the OMP up to the carb so it can be injected into the rotor housings and lubricate the apex seals. Therefore, they're supposed to be oily, but preferably only on the inside
