Moar details on modifying the MX-5 short shifter, please?

I know it's still sky high, which is why I'm concerned there's clunking, I would understand a bit more if it was on the floor, but its only around 10mm lower I think.

The MX5 short shifter has had a few write ups, you can buy an RX7 specific shifter, but you'd be mad to spend £150 on one, particularly as its very possible you might not even like how it feels.

the throw is much shorter than standard but the shifter itself is actually longer, which I like as it means it is a bit closer to the steering wheel, although the RX8 gear knob I have is much lower so it basically negates this anyway.

although I didn't use the flat metal ring that came in the kit, I found it worked fine without. Also I used two washers on each bolt as a spacer rather than 1. I didn't take many pictures though. My kit I used was actually made wrong so the pin that engages with the upper pivot ball went to the rear of the car not the front, but this has no effect on functionality. I have only used it a bit, it loosens up a bit with use, and It may wear out quickly but even if it does and I have to buy more as it wears out it still works out cheaper than an RX7 specific shifter kit. Are you sure that the springs are totally captive at the rear? You could check the top mount on your rear shocks to see that the nut(s) haven't worked loose?

The springs are definitely in their seat properly, after I fitted them I held them firm with two hands and they wouldn't move, and I can see they're sat right top and bottom. Ill check the damper top mounts but I don't think its those

That's not much of a result for a claimed 35mm drop, even taking into account a few decades of spring sag. I got some TA Technix springs with the same drop and ended up with -10mm at the front and -20mm at the rear. Obviously, I had old saggy springs to start with but at least there was a noticeable difference. (well, to my eyes anyway).

Your pic with the two springs together tells the story. Maybe you should send that to the supplier?? You do need to give the springs a few hundred miles to settle but I would expect that a -35mm spring would be noticeably shorter than a stock item to start with.

I think I should say something to the spring supplier but I doubt they will do anything. I want stance coilovers really but I thought it's worth trying springs first

I had to look up what PPE meant. And yes - he put on his converse instead of his usual flip flops, and I chose this photo because he is using both hands
