I've never seen an S2 with that lock in the UK, all the ones i've seen look externally the same as the S3. In the US, the S2 got the bigger fuel tank.
"Fluid Capacities:
Fuel tank: 14.5 gal (1979 & '80) 16.4 gal (1981 & later)"
https://www.rx7.org/public/1st-gen.html
I can only assume fuel cap door lock was different in germany
I've read the link you've postet. Can you post a picture 1981 without fuel cap door lock.
1981 - '85 Few differences among them.
Electric fuel filler door release standard. In 1983 the key
operated fuel door release was eliminated.

Ok, so if the electric release was 83 only some early S2s have the key and some late S2s are electric, so this isn't a good way to identify between the series. I've learn't something new! I did wonder if it was an option.
Here's an S2 which has electric release, which must be a late one.

FWIW My S2 has the electronic flap release with no keyhole as well.
Maybe a UK thing?

Electronic fuel flap release was introduced to Australian models in late s2 (around late 1982 from memory). I assume UK was the same.

I know one of my two series 3's had a key flap.

White series 3 for sale on Ebay.
Its got wire wheels which I haven't seen before, but I don't think they suit the car.
Its white with a brown interior, an unusual combination, but i suppose it might have had a colour change.
Buy it now price £2995
