Thanks for that explanation aye, James.
I think that along that, along with detonation causes the issue from what I believe aye.
. Thanks for the tip on the thick baffle also aye bro! Will look in to that
. The o-ring is a great thing aye
Bit of a bummer aye! I have somehow managed to not get too down about this. It is giving me an opportunity to do some mods I have been wanting to do for a while now.
So I borrowed an engine crane from some mates and lifted it out in an afternoon. Threw it in the back of my mighty workhorse of a Yaris. It fit great, even with everything still attached
. Then took it over to JamieR's house and got it on the engine stand

Steve-A gave me his old 54mm socket. We should all know what for. JamieR welded it to a large boxed piece of steel. My feet only just started lifting off the ground as the nut broke loose. I think it came off fairly easily due to it being freshly put together and not Mazda's godly torque they used to tighten it
.

Not looking too flash here. Not sure what causes this exactly? Lightweight Exedy flywheel and clutch setup. I didn't notice any slipping when I had driven it at all
. Not sure if I should get it machined or what? Opinions?

Stationary gear bearings. No major destruction there. Sump oil was clean of any glitter when I emptied it. Promising, but not getting my hopes up
. The second picture looks like there is a small scratch. I haven't been back to Jamies house for a while due to lockdown. I have no idea whether this is acceptable to reuse or not? Or how it happened. Possibly on install or removal of he bearing/gear? Not sure. Any opinions are welcomed.

We took the sump off and were greeted with this inside and over the oil pickup mesh/filter stuff. Jamie and I were pretty worried at first glance!
. Upon closer inspection is was excess silicone from the build, which had fallen off the joins when sandwiched together and the sump gasket. But there was also some solid material in there! We cleaned it off to figure out what it was. We came to the conclusion that the bottom of the plates had flaked off some loose material and fallen in to the sump. Promising, but not getting my hopes up
.

Removed the rear plate to assess any initial damage. We had a good look around, without spinning the engine. It all looks pretty damn shiney and smooth in there! I believe Era used SCR Power seals aye. Looking through the exhaust ports earlier on - they seemed sweet as! Debating if its worth completely stripping the block down and rebuilding it now. Cleaning out all the passages where silicone/plates flaking may have been sucked up the oil pickup? Or do I just grab a new plate and throw it on?

Even the face of the rear plate looks pretty sweet at first glance when we took it off. Looks like a few dots on it and some circular mark. No idea what they are
. The cracking on the other hand

That is as far as I have gotten with the engine. I have started a few other mods which I will post up when the time comes. I'm not in any particular rush to rebuild it. Get it done properly aye!

Yeah I'm going to try and track down the stronger series 5 plate aye! I'm going to be running about 1 bar of boost maximum. Nothing too crazy. But enough. I was only at 12 PSI when this happened! I have already started with more mods whilst the engine is outKYPREO wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 9:16 pm Sorry to hear about this. Yes unfortunately it is a common failure point but moreso in series 4 blocks and i think perhaps early series 5. Mazda thickened the casting in that area in later engines. But if you up the boost, the rear plate in later engines can still crack.
Pretty much everything James said.![]()
This is now a chance to come back better and stronger than before!
