Chuck the thermal reactor and fit headers. Big improvement in power and will rev more freely.
You'll need mufflers which will take the high heat from a rotary engine. Cheap eBay ones won't last more than a month.
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

Search the bifurcated pipe from a S2 1981-1982 it solves the problem. No welding possible to much exhaust heat in that red arrow.

My opinion in hungary you shall never have a problem with a racing beat, or elford turbo stainless steel exhaust. Save power, weight, money, fuel and better sound.

I have no good pictures, but I'll try to shoot some. I think I have a problem at the same place you've marked with the red arrow, but I'll try to investigate.

However now I know and I'm pretty sure of it that my car has a thermal reactor, not a cat. I was confused before, because the '84 parts catalogue I found told that my car has a cat. Also I knew that I have a small third pipe near the rear muffler I was not sure where it was coming from. Now it's clear that it is part of the thermal reactor system or so. That's why I'm very interested about the differences between US and Europe specification Rx7s on I've found virtually no information so far.

Still, I'm unsure what to do next :) I guess that local exhaust specialists can't rebuild (and also wouldn't understand as they have never seen anything like this before :?: ) a system with thermal reactor. Buy that or one like it as a pattern and then your local man can make new bits to match......easy to match that 'Double S' system (they are no longer made new).

George
The third pipe is a pipe for surplus air, taking air blown into the Thermal Reactor by the air pump at the font.
You don't need the third pipe or the air pump, they all come off.

I would not ask a local specialist to rebuild what you have now; as you say he will not understand it and will mess it up.
If you see Ian's post from yesterday or day before (stainless exhaust for sale), it shows what you need.

Elford Engineering in UK made a stainless system for standard FB's. As did a company called Janspeed, and another called 'Double S'.

I've had an Elford system in the past on a series 2 and now I've got a Double S on a series 3.
Both sets of fitting instructions are on this Forum.

They should all fit your FB much the same. Trouble is I don't think any of the above are still manufacturing them.

Both Janspeed and Double S still exist as companies. Maybe you could see if they still have the original patterns?

Some updates:

- Idler arm bushings: the old bushings have been replaced with the ones you recommended (they fit perfectly). The replaced ones were not the original ones. It was clear, because they were very tight and also the signs of some tinkering were visible (they were hewed(?) from a different type of bushings).

Now the backlash of the steering wheel is slightly smaller, and it is a bit better to drive. Still, in my opinion the play is too big (well above 2 cms). How can this be decreased? I saw that there is something on the steering gear that seems to be some adjusting method, but I'm not sure.

- Exhaust: I could check the whole exhaust system and the hole is exactly at the location that Spirit r showed. Also it is clear that some repairs were made earlier there. The other parts of the system appear to be in more or less good shape.

Hewn George not hewed. Easy for us I know. But hey your English is superb.

The advice from world wide experts (that's not me), is to do bushes 1st which you've done. Then check all joints in system, ball joints, track rod ends, then check tracking. Only after all that proceed last of all to the steering box adjuster......someone who's done it will advise the procedure??

But 2 cm is good at the rim....I doubt you will improve that.

Exhaust......that bit of the exhaust has air holes through it inside.......I think once it's fractured its finished. You could try Mazda for a new front piece. Expect a Magyar's Ransom .....if you can get one!
