properly inspirational work Steve.... it goes to show what can be achieved if someones got the bottle to just go for it..... taught yourself to weld, spray and all sorts to get you car into this great condition and it's a credit to all your hard work.

Just out of interest, what size compressor are you using?

Cheers chaps :)

I'm afraid Marc, you'd have to join the queue. My mum's Mx5 is already waiting in line! haha.

Ian, I'm using a 25L compressor, but withs a 2.5hp one rather the standard cheapest 1.5hp ones. Basically it's like the ones they were selling in Aldi but from eBay instead. The spray gun I'm using is based on a 1.5hp compressor, so although with the small receiver the compressor it running almost constantly, it is more that capable of keeping up with the spray guns needs and the pressure never drops. I've also got a separate inline filter and regulator, as i've read the standard ones fitted aren't up to the job for spraying really.

It's been a busy old week for me, but with the retro rides show fast approaching I had to knuckle down and get on with finishing this paint work off.

I finished at lunchtime yesterday so got home and got straight on with lacquering my rear quarter that I painted last week. Preferably I'd have not driven the car between the two stages but it just wasn't practical. What I wasn't expecting was for half of my local roads to have been 'surface dressed' in other words 'lets shove some tar down and then heap gravel all over it and hope for the best and leave you all with a totally crap road surface', not only does this mean taking my life in my hands if I decided to ride my motorbike but it also meant the side of my car got coated in tar and my windscreen received a nice new stone chip

Image

Anyway with the tar removed I got busy spraying, so the rear quarter is done and just the door to paint.

Image

I still had daylight left, and didn't want to start sanding and stuff near the soft fresh paint of the quarter, so time for some mechanicals.

The clutch hydraulics have slowly been getting worse recently, so last week I bit the bullet and ordered a new master and slave from the states.

Image

Popped them on and it was so much easier to bleed than the old leaky master cylinder and now the clutch bites in exactly the same place every time! Luxury!

Image

This was the first in a two stage plan to make my car a little more driveable. The second stage was to re-work the throttle linkage on my throttle bodies.

When I initially set-up the throttle bodies I just used the standard Suzuki throttle cam which was much smaller than the cam on the original carb.

Image

Combined with the much larger throttle plate area, driving like a normal human being required very careful right foot movement. While rummaging around in the shed for my flare spanner I found an old cam wheel that I think was off my old 2t motorbike. Bit of drilling and welding later it was mounted up.

Image

And the good news is I've now got a normal amount of pedal movement. So it's definitely easier to drive now :)

Today the door's time came, and I had help from Ross so for once there's pictures of me actually working.

Image

The door came out pretty well really, I got a better finish to the lacquer than on anything I've painted with the gun yet.

Image
Image

In that photo it looks like the door is the wrong colour compared to the wing, whereas in fact the wing is the wrong colour! haha. TBh I'm not worried. All the fresh paint needs flatting and polishing now but I'm trying to leave that as late as possible to really let it harden off.

The main thing is there's really no rust left now! yaaaaaay! :D

Thanks again guys :) It has been a long road, but the build is just as much fun as the end result, and I couldn't have done it without you guys to point me in the right direction. 8-)

With the retrorides gathering fast approaching the end of last week was a bit of a mad rush to flat, mop and polish all my fresh paintwork. But with a bit of luck with the weather we managed to get it all sorted. I'm pretty happy with the end result, my only slight disappointment is that in some lights the paint match isn't as good as I'd hoped. It's certainly less noticeable now it's all polished but it's still there. Talking to people at the gathering it sounds like I've got as good a match as could be hoped for when matching 28 year old metallic paint and that the only real way round it is a complete respray so for now I'm happy!

The gathering was really good fun, had a decent bunch of rotaries together and I managed to get a spot in the afternoon hill climb session. My mate Ross took some video clips of me on the hill. It looks so tame from outside the car but inside it felt like I was really going for it! haha

This evenings sunset was lovely and I couldn't resist going out for a B road blast and taking a few photos. She was still looking shiny from the weekend polishing and it's been a long time since she looked so photogenic so please excuse the picture whoring! :P

And one without the car. It's having views like this a 5 minute drive from home that reminds me why I could never live in the city.

Very nice work on the bodywork! I finally took the time to read through your whole thread, very nice job on the car I really like it! I'm about ready to start installing my megasquirt as well, hopefully I don't have too many issues...

I'm a little surprised to see you using a Siphon feed spray gun though, are those still common over in Europe? They have all but vanished over here in the States, replaced with HVLP guns...

Either way, great work, great pics too!
