Well what a day, set off at 8:30 Salisbury-bound and were on the dyno by 10. First things first, timing checked and set, knock sensor hooked up and idle map sorted. On then through the standard motions of farting around with set points in the rev range at cruise and then start introducing boost for WOT. Everything was going smoothly until it was boost time, and it was apparent that we had no form of boost regulation whatsoever, and kept hitting the boost cut on the ECU. We hooked and airline and gauge up to the gate and it came clear that this was the problem - it wasn't opening until 20psi.
Off it came and I split it hoping to find two springs, I wasn't expecting to discover the contents of a pond.
I mean - WTF?!
Anyway, the guy at the road took it off and cleaned it in the parts washer for me and made it spotless and after a bit of love was all good, he then cut and flattened the end of the spring and when put back together was releasing at our 14 psi goal. Happy days.
So we had gate pressure, but this isn't much good for fuel mapping as they bounce around all over the place. This meant I actually had to decipher the japanese instructions for the HKS boost controller which after some frantic googling led us to success and after 3 attempts we gained full boost control at a lovely 14.7psi.
The rest is history, and she made a whopping 395bhp AT THE WHEELS.
I think that'll do.
