it wasn't just the roof Derek, the inner A posts had gone, so had the screen pillars, the front scuttle and the inner bulkhead under the wiper tray..... it was just too far gone.

By the way, is this the same car that the windscreen surround has rotted through, Ian? It almost moved me to tears going through that thread thinking how cruel it's turned out :cry:
The hole in the clip is for weight saving ;)

Yeah, that was the plan :( As is often the way it became one of those things where the time and perhaps more importantly the errrrm... missappropriation of work equipment and stuff meant it wasn't going to happen. Shame really, cos the one he made up for his missus' car was a work of art :(

Plus, the filler hose could maybe do with replacing. Certainly the little overflow/breather pipe has cracked, though this is easy to replace as it's just flexi 15mm fuel hose. The filler neck hose is the problem; it's 48mm diameter and proper fuel necks with bends only seem to come in 45, 51 or 57mm diameter :roll: You can get Samco silicone "fuel" hose in 48mm but it states it's only for short-term exposure to fuel, not for permanent immersion or transfer of it. The bend in the original pipe is gentle enough that you could probably get away with a straight run of silicone pipe without it kinking, but I don't want to swap in something that's going to degrade quickly. The original isn't in too bad a nick, but is it worth taking a chance on putting something back that's probably already 30-odd years old?

Finally, gaskets... is there any way of discovering parts numbers for the cork gasket on the lift/return pipe plate and the rubber gasket on the fuel sender? Is there like a Mazda parts list online anywhere?

The part numbers for those 2 gaskets are 8871-60-962A and FA54-42-182, at least for an 84-85. They should cost around 10 EUR each from Mazda.

Yeah, kinda, thanks. It confirms how I ended up with mine being, although to be fair there's no other way it can really go! Still looks like there's something missing there, though, that clip bit looks like it ought to... well, clip to something really :lol: Are cable ties petrol-proof?

Anyway, I've ordered in a POR15 tank inside sealant kit so I'll report back on how that all goes when it arrives and I man up enough to try it. This tank's in really good nick, but knowing how rare they already are and how badly they can rot I'd like to do everything possible to future-proof it

Maybe the clip thing is something to do with the fuel injected 13b?

Derek - could you measure the width and length of the top section that has the hose connections? I wonder how close in diameter it is to the FC fuel injection top and if that would be an easy way to drop a high pressure pump in.

Height and width at longest points for the pipes and filter would be interesting too if you get a second. :)
