Tach doesn't like the cold?

Post by Steve-A »

Anyone else had any issues with their tach not liking the cold?

Every frosty morning we've had my tach hasn't worked till the cabin temp comes up a bit. Took about 5 minutes to come to life this morning!

Any ideas what it might be? I mean its not the end of the world, just a bit annoying. :)

FDs have legendarily weak printed tracks on the clocksets, it's more unusual to find one where everything works than one with random mutant faults. Dunno if FBs are the same? I mean, I know they're a multiplug unit with printed circuits but dunno if they break down like the FD ones. You can sometimes see which track is corroded and re-solder them. Other thing that occurs is where does the tacho output come from? If it's a worm-drive to the gearbox then maybe there's water getting in the union and freezing? My old Z400-4 used to do that. Amongst other things :x

I know the tach is triggered from the coil, and that I'll have to rewire it when I fit my Megasquirt. When I've got it all out then I'll check the continuity of the tracks, cheers for the heads up :)

It does almost seem like something is freezing. I wonder if there might be condensation in the actual dial mechanism. None to see inside the clocks enclosure though.

Hi Steve
Did you ever work out what this was?
I seem to have the same issue. Not until it has warmed up does the tacho jump into life.
