I think I will take the fuel tank out again and evaluate the extent of the corrosion on the top , I will take pics and post to find out which tank it is , thanks for all advise Mike
I can tell you now which tank it is Mike, it's a series 2........ and they rust from the inside out due to condensation forming on the inside of the top. This rust then finds it's way down your fuel lines, some gets through the fuel filter and then hits the carb causing running issues. Some of the guys on here have cleaned their tanks out and repaired them... depends how bad they are.... it's usually pin holes near to the filler....... have you checked out the buyers guide...? tells you about tank corrosion there

Mike deffo a series 2. The wheels say so.

Your VIN will be JMZFB13120066xxxx,
Whereas Series 3 VIN's are JMZFB13120070xxxx
The '66' will confirm it's series 2....but we've seen plenty to be sure.

Oh, and Mike, we noted your car back in 2010. It was on Pistonheads. Glad to say values have gone up recently.

This is available in the USA at just over $300 including delivery
It says that it will fit a series 2 Mazda RX7 but I have no idea if it would actually fit a standard car.
I am sure Tool and others will know for sure.

forget an aftermarket generic tank Mike .... it won't fit, will look a dogs dinner and will devalue the car.... fit a proper OEM tank and be done with it... if you can't find one, talk to Tim White at RXMotors, he'll sort you one out.

Hi

I got my mazda mx3 fuel tank coated inside and out and it will last another 20 years.
It's worth getting done.

Take note that the US Series 2 FB got the same larger 63L fuel tank as Series 3 RHD models. For whatever reason, the US (and possibly other LHD markets?) got the space saver tyre in 81 and the larger fuel tank to go with it but other markets didn't. The 63L tank will not fit into SAs and FBs that originally had a 55L tank as they have a deeper spare wheel well.
