Time to play with a rotary again

Post by Eman »

Hey guys,

I'm another bloke from Australia who is getting back into rotaries after a little hiatus... Lengthy background below which goes over the past 15 years.

First car was a 1982 Series 2 RX7. It was pretty standard, only modifications were the exhaust and wheels but I loved driving it. It was my daily driver in my final year of high school. Unfortunately it was stolen not long after school, we did recover it but it sat in various workshops for quite a while.
After a five or so years we got it running again and entered some hillclimbs. That was good fun but the motor was tired and needed a rebuild. We took it to a local engine builder and wanted a bridgeport... No problem the guy took our money, did the job and we then took it to another workshop to get dyno tuned. Sadly we found it had zero compression and didn't like retaining water. rbld
Rather than packing it in completely we went with a new motor; a 13B PP through our new friends Redline Rotary...

To run our motor in we purchased a road going Series 1 RX7 that had a 12A Mild Port, put the 13B PP in and drove from Sydney to Canberra and back 6 times one evening. Not exactly legal or comfortable but it worked!

While our motor was being built the opportunity came up to purchase a "setup" race car, supposedly drop a motor in and go. We thought sure let's do it and bought the Ford Capri. Unfortunately this wasn't the case, the previous owner liked pulling things apart for no reason... All of the suspension components were removed and setup was incorrect, wiring was half finished. After spending more time and money than we were hoping we were finally back on the track.

All was well until...

;s; Decided to move whatever we could into the Series 2 from the Capri and turn it into a sports sedan. Managed to keep the 13BPP, Gearbox, Wolf ECU, Ford 9" rear diff, Bilstein shocks/struts and a few other bits n pieces. This is an ongoing project but hopefully one day it will be finished.

Now that the Capri and S2 RX7 were out of action it was time to give the S1 RX7 some love. The 12A Mild port lasted 13 years in total, the last two involved hillclimbs. It finally died after one race meeting so we went with a 12A BP. That was another tough motor, a quick rattle can spray job to keep the scruiteneers happy and we were back on the track. This thing had some grunt, beating vehicles in higher capacity classes.

Sadly after two more seasons I did the grown up thing; bought a house and got married. This meant no time or money for the S1, meaning she was left out in the weather neglected. The time has finally come to get it back on the road. Won't be racing it but a 12A BP road car is appealing. Will need to completely redo the interior, fix up a couple of rust spots and a decent coat of paint (probably the same as the S2 to go with the gold Simmons V5 wheels we have). The engine will be pulled apart and given the once over before it's back on the road.

TLDR; Started with a standard Series 2 RX7, had a 13BPP built and put into a Capri, Capri crashed but good stuff is going into S2 RX7, bought a S1 RX7 and had a 12A BP built. Raced now getting it back on the road...

Cheers,
Eden

Great read and history of your involvement with these ace cars and nice to see you still have one to rekindle your love for them :)

Totally with you on the "grown up and stopped racing/working on cars" etc thing. I was pretty much in the same predicament but my race car/street car was open to the UK's weather and hasn't survived :( hence the swaying towards the rotary side of things. Can't wait to get an FB for myself to run and work on. I loved my RX8 and a 77 Datsun 100a so having an FB would mix classic and Rotary just fine :)

Keep us informed with your progress :)

Yeah pretty hard to forget the feeling of reving to over 9,000rpm! :D

That sucks about your race/street car! We had a Datsun 240z that was left out in the elements, sadly rust developed in the chassis rails and really the entire car.

Will do a build thread once I get the car home from my fathers place. In a sad state but recoverable. Looking back I wish I did this rebuild a couple of years ago, parts were alot easier to come by!

Thanks for the welcome. No problem I'm glad you could follow.

Nothing quite like the deep idle of a BP, although the sound of a PP at 13,000rpm is pretty good too

Welcome, you're right there and nothing like a good tune PP. I used to own PP motor few years ago and building another new one now for the road.
PP's a monster to drive compared to turbo e.g hard work and lots of fun.. Turbo's like "What! Is that all it can do"
