I'd repeat Dave (codge's) advice that the dying going up hills thing is probably choked up fuel filter/lines. Mine was exhibiting exactly the same symptoms and the fuel filter was basically full of tar when I changed it out, much to my eternal shame
Backfires actually are cool, my kids say so, so it must be true. 
Love to see pics of your other rides if you can? I have a lot of love for American muscle cars old and new... and the new Camaro is excellent
