Anyway, a few people have pointed me in the direction of this forum, and I have to say what a great place it seems to be. I've wanted a First Gen ever since I used to walk past one on my way to school, so it's nice to come full circle sorta thing. I know a fair bit about vulgar plastic rotaries but I'm starting to realise, nowhere near enough about proper old metal ones, so I expect I'll be hanging around asking loads of stupid and hopefully not too irritating questions

Evenin' all. Glad to make all of your acquiantance. My name's Nik, I've been around for a while in various guises haha. I've had a couple of FD RX-7s over the past five years but the latest ones just getting a bit too anarchic and I'm just now in the process of getting an FB as a daily driver. It's the only logical way to go

Re: Wotcher!
Thanks for the welcome guys
I have to say, I'm glad to see that you're all here, first gen knowledge was looking like being the one thing I'd miss about *cough* a certain other rotary site
In fact, believe it or not, there was actually a point when I thought "Bummer, how will I know whether my car's on Dave Nock's FB register?" Since I'm assuming that's you, "codge"? it's happy days haha.
Got a few pics here, I visited the car today. It's currently owned by Jason from Super 7, who bought it from apparently the archetypal little old lady who drove it once a month to church. Always thought that was an urban myth, but apparently it's true. Only in this case she drove it to the hairdressers once a month. Evidently it was her husbands who'd owned it from new, and he was clearly a guy who knew how to look after a car. There's vestiges of waxoyl all over the place. She eventually had to sell it on because she couldn't manage the non-PAS on it. The mileage is genuine, apparently at 55k
What we thought was incipient water seal failure turned out to be a corroded union on the rad hose stopping it from sealing, so that's my kind of easy fix. Pretty much all it needs now is a starter motor and a weld repair to the N/S sill in front of the rear wheel and it's good to go. Hopefully pick it up next week. Anyway, here's some pics for now, albeit not the best

Needs a good clean

It'll be living on the road, so I intend a full "detailing" sesh (God, I hate that word. Used to be called cleaning when I were a lad :grumble), claybar, scratch remover, polish, wax... then smother everything metal in ACT50 cos America hasn't given the world much that's good, but North Atlantic-proof metal preservative is one thing they have

Interior's lovely, and even the upholstery is nice, given how errr, of their time some of the colourways were

First thing to do in here is stereo. Lovely and original-looking though it is, I threw all my cassettes away last year when we did our loft conversion cos I thought I'd never need them again.
Curses. So a new stereo it is then.

Genuine mileage 8)

Under the bonnet's where it really shows how well this car was looked after. There's still traces of waxoyl everywhere you look, and other than a weep from the beehive (which hopefully won't live here too much longer) everything looks almost showroom new

Exhaust hand-made my a Rolls Royce engineer. Looks utterly fantastic and should outlast the rest of the car. Plus it means all the emissions stuff has already been deleted

Never had one of these before. Used to one number and one letter higher

And the wheels... again, almost a shame to drive on these through winter, never seen a set in this good a nick before

TBH, I'm already having fantasies about Minilites and deep dish offsets. Don't hate me

That's it really, thanks for looking

Re: Wotcher!
Although it isn't really the traditional way to welcome new members, I have to say 'you jammy b*****d'!!!
That's an amazing find Nik, the engine bay looks clean enough to eat your dinner off. What a nice car!
Genuinely clean tidy FB's are a rare animal and don't surface very often.
These things are very simple and basic compared to the FD but they do have their own little issues that the guys on here have all dealt with at some point so any advice you need re. FB's will be gladly offered.
Are you going to run it stock or get the tuning bug and port or boost the engine? They are a fun little car as standard, not mega fast but as a complete package they are a nice car to drive which is why they have a loyal following.... but put a turbo on it and it'll really fly.....

Re: Wotcher!
Lol, no offense taken, Ian
I certainly know a good find when I see it, and I couldn't believe how good this car was. How the old boy kept it so good through 55k miles I've no idea, he must have been one of "that" generation of gentleman motorist... y'know, the sort who would have bought a Ghia Granny or Cortina if he hadn't bought the RX, cleaned it every Sunday whether it needed it or not, had reciepts for every windscreen wiper he ever bought, etc.
I loved it when I test drove it, what an excellent little car. My FD's at around 430 bhp now so it was nice to drive something that wasn't trying to kill me every five seconds, and it's like opening a door in time back to what cars were like back when I started to drive and my mates had motors before even that. I actually feel almost guilty that I'm going to use it as a daily(ish) cos it's almost too nice, but I'm a firm believer that cars are made to be driven, and if you don't you steal a little of their soul. It's definitely too nice to start hacking up and turning into something it's not with turbos and stuff. Maybe if I didn't have the FD I'd change my tune.... For the moment, I'll start off gently with reliability mods and see where it leads
And maybe some wheels... Hmm, and lower it just a bit... and...

Hi Nik
Welcome and all that. Plenty of good info on here about all the usual reliability mods
I'm sure you'll catch the performance bug with the fb soon
