I want to replace the modern Sony unit in my Elford with a period unit.

if you are planning to lie down under the car, put the axle stands under the chassis rails, just behind the bulkhead.... where I have used blocks of timber under my car... the rails are re-inforced in this position.

don't put them under the engine cross member if you are getting under the car, they won't be far enough apart to keep the car stable...... stay safe!
The starter is secured with 2no 14mm bolts..... a short bolt reached from under the car and a very long bolt with a nut on the end of it which is accesses and removed from the engine bay. The long bolt passes through the rear engine iron and then the bellhousing and is located just under the oil cooler.
Disconnect your battery, unbolt the starter, lower it onto the ground below the car and then disconnect the wires going to it. I can change a starter motor in about 20 mins so it isn't a difficult job.

Thanks - I went to have a go at it today but my jack can not get high enough to get the axle stands under at any useful height so I will have to get myself a larger jack. Also I have the following axle stands, are they suitable for the position you are talking about or do I need flat ones?

Also how many wires should be going in to it? I could only see 1, and the replacement starter I have only seems to have one.

Isn't there a small push on wire connector that goes to the solenoid on the starter as well as the main cable?

How I get the car up is by trolley jack under the centre of the main front crossmember. Then I place my flat topped axle stands either side of the trolley. Ease off the trolley hydraulics and you can see the full weight setting down onto the stands. Put a tiny touch of pressure back on the trolley and you've then got 3 supports across the front.
That's for all my normal wheel- off servicing. If you need to lie down right under it then maybe OK some ramps or railway sleepers under the body would be safer.

I find repeated jacking on the chassis will sooner or later crush it......20 years at the MOT testers where he jacks up on the front members has caused some flattening. I take some pressure pads with me now. He's not best pleased.

As an old guy I found the trolley was the best retirement present of all.

Yes, of course. I didn't think to say that you always want to use wood packing wherever possible to minimise slip. Always good practice on large machine repairs.
(I tend to forget that most my generation were put through an engineering education which maybe isn't common nowadays).

I'll try to be more comprehensive in future.

Right so, Hello nice weather! Time to have another pop at my project..

I've replaced the starter and connected back up the main cable, however the similar other cable on the old starter was completely worn, and just fell to pieces when I tried to touch it.

It doesn't quite seem to fit though, I have removed the plastic part which shows the frayed wires (see pic) however it looks to me like this should actually be a sort of "in between" short piece which goes between this plastic clip and a "male" wire which plugs in to the smaller wire coming out of the starter? There is also another plug in the same area (not plugged in) which is black and yellow, any ideas what this is? or should be plugged in to?
